This creep used to hang out on Franklin Street doing a Svengali/Jim Jones kind of thing. He worked at a place called “Mind Windows.” I wouldn’t let him in the bar/cafe where I worked. His name was Edmund. Comforting to imagine that he’s likely dead now.

Freddie Kiger was asking me the other day about an earlier alignment of South Road in Chapel Hill. Back before the Civil War, the road leading east out of town ran through the middle of what's now Gimghoul.

Evergreen Lane (more like an alley) is the re-purposed bed of the former stage road. That is why Paul Green named the lower part of that road "Stagecoach Road." But the old road had long been abandoned when Gimghoul & Greenwood were built in the first half of the 1900's.”

Opening in late 1938, this garden apartment complex was the second of three constructed along this stretch of Hillsborough Street--followed shortly by Grosvenor Gardens to the west and preceded by Boylan Apartments to the east.



The complex was designed by Harrison Aubrey Underwood and was modern for its time, making good use of cross ventilation in the summer and a central steam heating plant in the winter. Units ranged from 3-5 rooms and rent started at $45.00 per month ($1000.00 AFI).



Underwood was also responsible for designing the Raleigh Building at Fayetteville and Hargett Streets and the University Apartments in Durham--a very similar complex constructed the same year.

Knew a couple folks who lived there years ago.
 
So the Giant Townhouse Apts are gone and replaced with a new monster complex
Probably 15 years ago-I just noticed last week.

Are those the ones that were adjacent to Old Well but were entered by way of the bypass?

Two entrances
One on MLK up towards city Hall on the other side of MLK
One on a road whose name I can't remember On the top it hits Franklin at the Presidents house On the bottom it hits the mini shopping Center on MLF near the Umstead park road lol my memeory

Old Well Apartments are apparently called Collins Crossing now...here's an oldie...near where the Red Baron was located once upon a time.

Can't believe another association here. I and 2 others were 1st tenants in one of the brand spanking new buidings of Old Well Apts. Shag carpet! Harvest Gold (fugly yellow) appliances! But I did make a life-long friendship with the girl who moved in across the breezeway.
 
When they first started selling them as condos Norman Block had a 10 year pro forma showing they'd be worth $45-50k in 10 years when they were selling for @$20k. I found it 10 years later when I was doing a presentation for the Realtors. They were selling for $18k 10 years later!LOL

My chief recollection at the time was that the swim test for me--a white male who had been swimming as long as I could remember--a trivial, bordering on laughable requirement. But when I found out how many black males had difficulty even floating, let alone swimming, it took on a different tone. UNC, with equal relevance, could have required a minimum time for the 100 yard dash that I could have never achieved, that would have just as trivial to black students as the swim test was for me.
 
I consider myself a Deadhead - been to approx 15 shows - but I didn’t go to this one - was tending bar at The Hardback Cafe at that time. From the service worker POV it was a fairly hellish week.
