UNC @ Charlotte

If this ragtag gang of misfit players actually looks cohesive, plays well and executes consistently it will be a miracle of one thing - coaching.

StrangerPackage was likely agreeing with, commenting on the team, not your comment.

Regardless, the opening drive compared to the rest of the game has been very confusing. Weird, weird season.
Thanks. I guess I was still a little pissed at the game - both games - and didn't catch that. I thought the comment was directed at me and not the team. Apologies

My hazy memory is there was a controversial play at the end of the game where the refs missed a call and screwed UNCC denying us an all UNC school national championship game.

It involved Jerome Whitehead for Marquette. I think he blocked a shot that was actually a goal tending ?
Yes. The Jerome Whitehead call. I shall never forget that.

He just can’t be normal or have a normal news cycle can he?

It seems not.

I expected him to do things his way and that he’d be a bit prickly, at times, but I thought there’d be some common sense about it. There’s no program upside to this decision, only downside.

i was being positive lol
i see two and a luck up and win for a thiird. more like one with an embarrassing l to richmond is more like it.
is there a word stronger than dreadful? thats us

I was simply comparing how the first two games started - and how they commenced after that. Both games started with a great looking drive of only a few plays ending in a sweet TD - making it look very easy. Then, shortly after that, things went squirrely. The first game against a tough opponent went South quickly and kept going down. The 2nd game wasn't much better over all, but it was against a terribly weak opponent so we were able to win - but only putting up 20 pts. We looked pretty shitty in both games after that first drive. That's what the hell my comment was about.
I was agreeing with your comment and wondering why the hell we can't have nice things😂

Hmmm...2 weeks in and it looks like my DGAF preseason attitude and subsequent self promise of not watching the current dumpster fire season was smart on my part.

I'll continue doing the same for the remainder for my own mental health.

What BB has is mack's leftover marginal players, the best ones having bolted, and a 70 new players that were quickly assembled out of a need for bodies. It will be a process. Recruiting is in a definite uptick. Best way to watch UNC is to consider TCU the before and watch the after come into focus. I would be concerned if I thought BB was not completely engaged. He is. Sit back and watch a program being built.

I choose to believe this. It alleviates the anger and is much healthier than alcohol.

Belichick is 73 years old. He has a pretty short timeline to build a program.

Positives on which we can build on:

1. Special teams;
2. No turnovers;
3. We may have found our feature running back - June.
4. Right side of the OL solidified. Left side work in progress. Center - need bodies back from injuries.
5. Played a lot of players, particularly on defense. D'Antre Robinson on the DL is starting to emerge (played 33 snaps). Guys like Dunbar-Hawkins (17 snaps), Ziglar (4 star safety 8 snaps) and Gbayer (30 snaps) are getting looks in game action. Gone are the days of Tommy playing only two linebackers the entire game. So many new names.
6. Gio making incremental steps. He still holds on to the ball too long.
7. According to Staples, good technique and pad levels on DL.
8. Minimal penalties.

I'm cautiously optimistic but I'm not doing back flips yet.

True. But he appears to be a young 73. Mack was an old 73. I think BB will get things in place over next 3 or 4 years then hand off to his son or kitchens. Settle in in CH and be sort of the godfather of UNC football. At least that is my hope. I damn sure ain't worried that we beat uncc 20-3 when mack would have beat them 55-38. This team will get better week by week but has a low ceiling. Would help a lot if Yates and Blaske returned healthy.

Is the beyond strange play calling on offense a result of:
a) clueless OC
b) No faith in QB and o-line

I'm leaning towards A. Who calls a run on 3rd and 1 and then a deep bomb/ prayer on 4th and 1 (QB was looking deep the entire time). Also, we called the exact same terrible screen pass 2 plays in a row on 3rd and 4th down. All night the announcers were saying "UNC isn't getting anywhere running left and right. Lots of yardage right up the middle though." And yet, time and time again in critical situations we were trying to run outside the tackles. There just seemed to be zero recognition of what was working. Stick with June. Why are we trying 25 different RB's when one was gaining yardage consistently.

I am sure kitchens and BB could explain the logic. Some have said we are being very vanilla and will break out more stuff later. Gio still learning system. Also could be when we try something again we are trying to fix mistake. I hated the 4th and 1 pass as I thought we were in position to wear them down. I just think kitchens and BB know more than me. And you. I have been surprised by number of buddies who believe they know more than BB.

You can be assured that Kitchens is calling the game as BB wants him to call. This isn't Fedora (not caring about defense) or Mack and Longo (calling the game the way he wanted to). Now, if BB has a problem with certain calls I'm sure he'll let Kitchens know about it and tell him to fix it.

BTW, on the 4th and 1 play, it's my understanding that was Gio's call. I'm sure it will be discussed in film session.

We're just scarred by Mack's teams which saw no improvement during the season - with a fall off at the end. We'll get better. The only question is how much.

I'm not convinced we saw much real progress from week one to week two - we just played a much worse team. In particular, the fact that our offense struggled so much to consistently move the ball against a Charlotte D that App had just torched is concerning. Obviously Belichick wants a more deliberate, ball-control offense, whatever the merits of trying to run that offense (personally I disagree with it), it obviously is not going to rack up video-game numbers in terms of points or yards. But the result of our 11 drives against Charlotte were two TDs, two FGs, six punts, and one turnover on downs. That simply isn't good enough. The second half is especially concerning; our five drives ended in four three-and-outs and a field goal. It's fine to take the air out of the ball with a lead, but you still need to get positive results, and failing to sustain drives and running 26 plays for 59 yards in the whole half is just not even close to good enough.
