You are the only one on here tilting at the WRAL and N&O windmills like Don Quixote. Many of us have even outright told you we don’t care about the N&O and WRAL pieces. We care about the results on the field. You have a really odd fixation on the N&O and WRAL for some bizarre reason, and your inability to move on from that part of the discussion coupled with our projection that the rest of us “support” the N&O and WRAL (what the heck does that even mean?) makes it obvious that you have an agenda here that isn’t solely about defending a football coach whose program is the worst one in major college football.
You have a tendency to extrapolate that because a handful of people respectfully and politely disagree with you, that the whole board is “shouting you down” or being hostile. You’ve done this for years now on many topics. I don’t understand the persecution complex. If you think that dislike of Bill Belichick is confined to this board, you clearly haven’t been reading IC or 247. The folks still carrying Bill’s water are in a small minority now.
Last not least, here’s why I dislike Bill Belichick. Because I’m a UNC football letterman, who has loved everything about this program long before Belichick and will do so long after him, who has been a Carolina football-first fan for 25 years now since I was in fifth grade (and that’s nothing at all against basketball- I love Carolina basketball too), and because I desperately want the program to be great, I can’t stand someone like Belichick who is doing quite literally everything in his power to turn the program into a national laughingstock, the butt of every single joke across the college sports landscape, and one that makes our own fanbase completely clear out of the stadium before halftime on national television. I dislike Belichick not because of his girlfriend or his gruff personality or any of the “N&O and WRAL” innuendo, but because of his arrogance and hubris, his indifference to trying to learn and understand college football, his insistence on nepotism/cronyism (which goes way back even to his time at NE), and his general proclivity for being an asshole who feels above being questioned.
I’m not sure what in the world I’m supposed to look at under this current coaching staff and have any legitimate hope that it’s going to get turned around. We’ve quite literally never seen a product on the field this bad – not under John Bunting (yes, seriously. We have reached a level of an aptitude that surpasses even those teams), not under Butch Davis, not under Larry Fedora, not under Mack Brown. Not only have we never seen a product on the field this bad, we’ve never had a less qualified coaching staff taxed with fixing it. We’ve never had a GM who pranced around calling us the 33rd NFL team well single-handedly assembling a team that probably couldn’t even be 33rd in Wake County power rankings at this point. That same GM just sent a letter to fans and donors just last week outlining a plan for rebuilding the program that is completely the opposite of what we should be doing or what any serious college football program should be doing in this day and age.
I don’t dislike reflexively dislike Bill Belichick because I just woke up one day and decided to hate the head football coach of my favorite program. I dislike him because he has, in his arrogance and hubris, made that program look beyond decrepit on the field, has completely embarrassed it on a national stage in ways it has never been embarrassed before, and because I personally do not believe at 73 years old that he has the drive, the passion, the desire, or the know-how to fix it. And if that is the case – and it’s looking more and more likely that it is – why would we not move on sooner rather than later?
So much here.
88 and 89 were as bad, maybe worse.
Remember Furman? Miami of Ohio?
James Madison
It's not that I like BB, it is that I instinctively support UNC coaches in all sports until they don't deserve that. Mack Brown crossed that line last year with his hubris.
You are right about wral and nando. Part of that is because they spent 7 years trying to destroy my alma mater. Part is because I abhor agenda driven media, and that is what they do.
I said three days ago to be wary of their reporting, and others. And I was right because much of what was said has fallen apart. I knew WRAL did no reporting and simply answered the phone when a disgruntled parent called. A point I made is that because of them, national media would pick up and run with the narrative. Meanwhile both have given cursory coverage to a potentially explosive story in Raleigh that is more than winning or losing football games, but of young men being sexual assaulted by a trainer in what is described as an open secret over years. Their refusal to do their job is why we have not heard a pip from the national media on this.
I have said repeatedly that the product is dusappointing, but I am willing to acknowledge successes, recruiting and cash in hand. BB and Lombo clearly whiffed in portal, the QB and oLine being the big issues. They offered competitive money to two QBs who did not come. I am sure the timing of the hire, the need to fill out recruiting class and lack of staff contributed. I don't think someone who is not all in can take a recruiting class from around 12 players or so and 1 4 star and a ranking of 70 to 38 players, nine 4 stars and 17th. Further I know a lot of players and for months they have said that BB is working hard, they like him and it will take time.
This is the autopsy. One, two or three, whatever, disgruntled people, players, coaches, staff, maybe even media decided to call WRAL and take down BB and now have UNC fans in a circular firing squad. Mission almost accomplished
I know as well that those on here and IC are not representative of the typical UNC fan, but are keyboard warriors shielded by anonymity, most absent the capacity to say they were wrong
I am 68 years old and have seen a lot of coaches come and go and not one ever has been under such an assault 5 games into season 1. BB deserves a chance to bring in his own players, correct his mistakes and see what he can do.
That said, I agree that if 10 percent of what Ollie alleged were true he should be fired today. None of it is standing up, so we are left to be pissed because BB spent one day or whatever in Nantucket during a bye week that garnered a headline from IC saying BB on road recruiting. But that translates to cowherd saying he vacationed to Nantucket while on the screen it says BB talks buyout with UNC.
I hate shitty journalism and WRAL and Nando are using their power to go after UNC, with BB being the target.
As far as shouted down it was throwaway line. Years ago I came on IC with a different political viewpoint than the herd, got into some squabbles, made some mistakes but there are plenty, including you, who have labeled my treatment unfair. I really don't care. I am older, retired, mostly content , not nearly as combative as I once was so I don't get as riled up.
As a journalist I worked every day to try to tell the truth, give those who disagreed a voice, and mostly worked not to allow the power of the pen to corrupt me. I think I did that although you can find others that disagree.
I think the kind of journalism practiced by the media from 2010 to 2017 toward UNC was irresponsible and I think they are still pissed and see an opening. BB should rise or fall based on the truth, and as we have seen this week some media will not deliver it.
What is true is that 5 games into season 1 everyone expectations are not being met and that needs to change. If not, bye.
