I may be totally wrong on this as I often am but I think agenda item number one, two, and three has to be the OL. We are in dire straits there right now. It is essentially going to take hitting a royal flush to be able to field a good OL next fall, given how few starter type instant impact OL guys there typically are in the portal and how exorbitantly expensive those few are. And if we can’t field a good OL next fall, the QB isn’t going to matter.
Maybe we’ll find a Michael Vick and he can get 1st downs and TD’s while running for his life.

It is amazing how good or bad an OL may seem based on the quality of the QB and the playcalling.

I remember thinking the Patriots had a terrible O-line when Bledsoe was the QB and then it magically got better when Brady became the QB. Same thing with the Cowboys. Once Romo took over for Bledsoe, the Cowboys O-line magically improved.

We will obviously hit the portal hard for O-line. With competent coaching and QB play, O-line should not be a concern. If we bring back Freddie to design the offense, and Gio to leads it, you could have all Outland trophy winners along the line and they would still look terrible.

I hear ya. I hope you’re right.

The OL Lamar's year gave up a ton of sacks, and people blamed it on so much running. Then the year after Lamar left they were awful as an OL. So Lamar definitely helped covered up a weakness.

It was exciting seeing a Heisman in Kenan though.

A good QB can only cover for a bad OL for so long. You are not beating anybody good consistently with a bad OL...Drake Maye at UNC will attest.

A report saying Baker is happy? I have not seen that.

I can't imagine anyone thinking a 4 star QB would be happy as a 4th string QB with no snaps on the year, especially when passed by someone in his same class that was less highly recruited.
on the article titled "latest football offseason scoop" from a few weeks ago. the section on Bryce Baker notes that it appears the staff doesn't think much of him but hasn't been trying to push him out... "And, when speaking to sources close to the situation, they indicate he’s happy in Chapel Hill."

I'm speaking more to the timing than the quality. You were very worried that Freddie was still the official OC in early December.

I suppose the hiring could/should have been made a couple weeks earlier, but I think it is far more important that the right hire be made. Whether this is the right hire remains to be seen. Agenda item No. 1 is substantially upgrading the QB position.
It will be nice to stop the bleeding regarding time. As Thamel's latest report says, a new hire announcement is still not imminent. The OC will have to re-recruit the existing roster to a certain extent before the portal opens as well as reach out to recruit new players from the portal to come here. Its a lot of work to get done in a week over Christmas/New Years.

But bringing in a college coach should be advantageous over someone not in the college game regarding timing, for sure.

In all seriousness, if this is true, I have to wonder where IC is getting it's information from. First the contradictory reports following the Clemson shit-show, then the "shit-show" of an OC search, now this.

I wonder if this means that the staff feels pretty good about bringing in a QB from the portal and let Baker know?
this was a foregone conclusion to everybody except for the people carrying Belichick's water. i don't think it means anything other than that Baker realized this season that he was never going to see the field in Chapel Hill unless we had a different HC.

the only thing interesting about it is that it comes after that report that Baker was "happy" in Chapel Hill. and given the message board rumor that kept getting repeated in belichick's defense that his family didn't want him to play this year. it would appear that things just are as they seem.

Oh I get that. I was saying/questioning if this is a sign that they've worked out the details with a QB. Otherwise, you'd still keep him around, in the event that you don't land a QB from the portal.

There's more reliable info on Reddit than those pay sites.
IC has been on point with info for a long time. It just seems like with this staff/program they're getting their info from folks not close to the situation, or from folks pushing false info (for whatever reason). Having said that, it could also be the other media (in this case Thamel) who're getting their info from folks not close to the program or from folks pushing false info (for whatever reason). Ben posts in the Thamel thread reads like it's a done deal, just not "announced" yet. So, who knows 🤷‍♀️
