I had to get a huge chuckle out of this. I am not an expert in strength and conditioning but I do enjoy it as a hobby and have read and learned a lot about it. I'm fascinated by this supposed sudden team-wide gain in strength and speed that miraculously occurred in the bye week after Clemson but was somehow completely missing against UCF, Charlotte, and Richmond.

Yes. Why would a coach try to make his program attractive to players?

All ears.
You don't make "gains in speed and strength" that quickly. It takes months and years to measurably improve strength and speed. We aren't playing better ball because we had some magical physiological transformation in the last 3 weeks since the Clemson debacle. We're playing better ball in large part because the players are putting forth better effort than we saw in any of the first 5 games. I just thought it was funny that Jones was touting that some magical improvement in speed and strength has occurred. Just a totally random musing on my end, admittedly apropos of nothing significant.

I think the point of this thread has become to accentuate anything negative and poo-poo anything positive.
No, it's to discuss UNC football, which is currently continuing to massively underachieve despite hiring a 6-time Super Bowl winning coach and paying him and his staff tens of millions to be a lot better than what we've been. I don't understand why some of y'all are so uncomfortable with the critique of Bill Belichick. He has agency. He could be making better hires and coaching a lot better. We could have a much better record and could be playing with a lot more of a sound scheme with a lot better attention to detail, and these critiques would be muted.

Trust me, for every bit of criticism I’ve had for Bill Belichick, I had the exact same for Mack Brown and Larry Fedora before. Nobody is immune to criticism when they’re getting paid ungodly amounts of money to make UNC football respectable.

Yep. Actually the reverse typically happens during the season. Gains tend to happen during the offseason/preseason. In season may encourage some buildup in stamina, but generally a degradation in speed and strength. Players are generally recovering and focusing on gameplanning/reps rather than burning themselves out running sprints and heavy lifting.

There is a difference between track speed and game speed. There is a difference between gym strength and football strength.

I am willing to give Jones the benefit of the doubt that what he meant is that S&C gains have started to manifest themselves on the field as players better understand their role. For example, June could be thinking less as the season goes on, which manifests itself as being faster on the field.

Edit - I’m also willing to consider that Lombardi is waging a PR campaign with media types that the new regime changes are happening behind the scenes. The BS about new PRs spouted during the Syracuse game (which trench fighter specifically refuted) gives some weight to this theory as well.

Lord have mercy, please don’t tell me we are going to have to create a separate UNC football thread so that those of us who want to critique our football program can do so without offending the delicate sensibilities of those who want to blindly wave the pom-poms. Come on, now.
Notice how almost none of their posts ever directly address the points that the rest of us are making lol. It’s mostly just complaining that we are too negative, but nothing substantive beyond that.

Yeah, that would make more sense. I totally acknowledge that it was pedantic on my part. Just something that amused me as I was scrolling Twitter. Probably did not need to share it here but I did.

This will be the fifth straight year they’ve finished outside of the top 10.
I did not know that...

I do know :

2021- finished 10-3
2022 finished 11-3
2023- finished 9-4
2024- finished 10-4

and from 2015-2020 never finished outside the top 4

And as I said, he may be on the hot seat this year because Clemson fans will not be pleased.

That said, would UNC fans love to have that record dating back to 2015 ?

We do seem to be improving I just don't know how much of that is because of our opponents so will withhold judgment until after the season. If Stanford beats us all bets are off!

Promise me exactly 9-4 for four years and I would sign up

So y'all are looking to argue? What points? I have just shared my perspective. What do you want me to attempt to refute?
I think it’s notable that you think we are specifically referring to just you.

And no, speaking for myself, I’m not looking to argue. I’m looking to be allowed to voice criticism of an adult professional coaching staff without it being implied that all we are doing is looking for negatives or it being implied that we are not a good fans.
