I worry Lombardi is grasping at straws and mortgaging our future with 1-2 decent classes. He also seems to be ignoring local players which is not good for the long term success of the program. It also seems like their solution to everything is writing a check instead of building a positive environment.
Are they ignoring local players or are local players close enough to realize something. I can tell you this...wearing a UNC anything in the Triangle during football season just kind of makes you the butt of a sad and inevitable joke about Belichick and/or Jordon. There's no positive vibe at all about BB or the program in the area. That has to have some sort of impact.

I'm sure that many will point out that the two things aren't directly connected, but it's still disgusting to see UNC shutting down longstanding and prestigious centers and departments in an effort to save $70 mil while at the same time the powers-that-be have no problems paying Belichick alone (not including his staff of friends and family) $50 mil. And that's not just because of Belichick, I would say that if we were paying any head coach $50 million.

And yet we just got 4 star out of North Carolina with offers from Georgia and OSU. It is a neat position. If UNC recruits well, it's money. If we don't it's a clown show. Young athletes think they are going to fix the mess. They don't dwell on ,4-8. If folks actually listened to them they talk about the opportunity to play for the goat and to get prepared for NFL. That is what they say .

I am glad we are restocking. If, as everyone frets, The Experiment fails, at least we will have some players in the pantry. I think with talent BB gets it done.

Where in NC? I dont follow recruiting. I said local and was responding to the comment about local players. Local is the Triangle.

As to the assertion that we are building a pantry, well let's just say that i have a fundamentally different view. In today's world, you might be stocking someone else's pantry just as much as your own. Kids are not going to stay if they dont like the direction. Money spent on incoming freshmen is not necessarily an investment in the future in any way, shape, or form.

The players we should be paying for are the ones we expect on the field in 2026. Do we expect these freshmen on the field in 2026?

There is a difference in getting a four star recruit vs keeping a guy that got seven sacks and looked like your best defender. You have to retain the good players to have a chance

The player is Marquis Bryant from Rolesville. I assume local means NC. I do think the staff has recognized a need to look more local. As for Thompson I hate to lose him. We know nothing about the why. I think what's interesting and gets very little mention is BB and Lombo have said they want to build through recruiting and plug holes with portal. It seems counterintuitive for a guy 73. But that is what they are doing.

I dont think it is counterintuitive. I think it is a flatly wrong approach for this coach at this school in this situation.

And if we were ignoring recruiting, spending all our money in the portal, and the results were poor and he was fired, leaving nothing in the pantry, what would people say then? I like this approach. A lot. My biggest fear with a reboot is the time it would take to be relevant. If UNC were to suck again next year, and staff replaced, this gives us something to build on.

In the Portal and NIL era, I wouldn’t consider any players “in the pantry.” Especially after a coaching change.

I don’t know where it ranks, I’d guess pretty high.
I’ve seen Ben say that in terms of overall roster spend we aren’t on the level of the top end of the P2, but we do compete in the level just below that (or something to that effect).

Understand everyone wants specific numbers and it would be interesting to see a true stack rank of every FBS team’s budget, but barring major changes to the sport we’re probably never going to get that. Reading between the lines though it sounds like UNC is in a good spot as far as NIL money goes. A GM that’s actually worth being paid twice as much as the next highest-paid college GM should be able to put together a roster that easily competes in the top half of the ACC with those kind of resources.

Can they be “in the trunk” of the metaphorical car bringing them home?

“In the grocery bag”?

“On the conveyor belt”?

I’m gonna need a catchy phrase here.

Who said we should be ignoring recruiting? We should be recruiting and building a stable of talented kids who want to be in chapel Hill while buying talent to plug holes in the portal. Buying talent that won't play while on our payroll only to be outbid once they are ready is foolish to me.

UNC needs the warm porridge mix of recruits and transfers. Hard to find the right mix. Part of me does think that UNC would be better off (with a different coach) embracing a build through recruiting. As many point out, the big problem is that it takes time and how many will transfer out once they are good enough.
The key IMO is when are schools going to implement Non-Compete clauses of a sort in NIL deals/scholarships? Basically get recruits to commit to a certain number of years. Don't think it has been tried yet, but schools like UNC and others are going to get fed up having kids transfer out to the powerhouses. Athletes being paid employees now, might as well treat them as such. Or is such a thing impossible because most recruits would never sign with something like that in place?
