I mostly agree with this. Chip is a way better OC than what was demonstrated during his brief stint in Vegas. There were some concerning tidbits coming out about forgetting playcalls and calling plays that weren't installed but who knows how much credence to lend to those rumors.

To me, Chip Kelly would be a solid B as a hire IF we are able to parlay it into attracting either a stud QB or a bevy of stud OL from the portal (ideally both, obviously). If we can do so, we'll have a fighting chance at bowl eligibility and maybe slightly better next fall, with the opportunity to show meaningful and demonstrable progress/improvement that would warrant extending this experiment to year 3. If we can't do either (and especially if we can't rebuild the OL anyway), it's not going to really matter who the OC is because the current talent level of offensive personnel is dire.

Chip's offense at its best is predicated upon utilizing wide outside zone blocking and "pin and pull" schemes where the offensive tackles pin defensive linemen inside and guards pull to block linebackers while involving tight ends and pre-snap motion to create mismatches and exploit defenders out of position- and doing all of this while operating at a breakneck tempo to maximally stress the defense. It's hard to effectively teach/coach/install in a single offseason, let alone with a mishmash of new quarterbacks, OL, etc. That said, it would be way better than anything we saw last year with Freddie Kitchens and whatever the hell that offensive scheme was attempting to be.
He's highly qualified with no neoptism or favoritism required. I would curve that to an A+ for this staff.

Fair enough! We'll take it!

I mainly just meant that he'd be yet another instance of UNC going for the splashy name hire of an older guy who is on the downward slope/trajectory of his career and who would be yet another attempt at microwaving success with someone whose best days as a football coach are well behind him. But I also realize that this staff is on borrowed time so they've got to pull out all the stops they can.

Oh, I concur entirely. It's at least as much style as substance and might still tile more toward style in that balance. BUT the remainder of the staff especially at the top is entirely style and zero meaningful substance so it's an improvement.

It's kind of funny, if you had told me in 2010 when I was with UNC football that one day our coaching staff would go from Mack Brown/Gene Chizik to Bill Belichick/Chip Kelly, I'd have incredulously wondered how many national championships we'd won.

I definitely don’t begrudge anyone for being excited or optimistic, I’ve said that many times and I’ll keep saying it. I truly commend the folks who are. I’m personally just way past the point at which I’m going to give UNC football any benefit of the doubt whatsoever anymore.

I was adamantly opposed to the Belichick hire from day 1- and so far I’ve been proven right on 100% of my concerns. I would be even more adamantly opposed to Bobby Petrino being hired to coach here, and in fact if he is so hired, I’m comfortable saying I am completely out on supporting UNC football until this current experiment ends. He’s an awful person and I want him nowhere near being an ambassador representative of my alma mater and the program from which I hold four varsity letters. At least my concerns about Belichick are 100% coaching related and not character related. My dislike of Bobby Petrino is 100% character related; there are far too many good offensive coaches out there that we could hire to not further soil and tarnish our reputation by hiring that scoundrel.

I’ll take Chip Kelly all day, every day. I would still have several reservations about the wisdom of yet again hiring someone with a big name who may be on the downslope of their effectiveness in their career, but I at least think Kelly is a person of character, is an effective play caller and offensive coach, and would be the best signal yet that Belichick is willing to adapt and adjust.

The reality of the situation as it stands right this moment- and obviously that could change, and I surely hope it does- but right now we are staring firmly down the barrel of this being a failed experiment that ends after two years. Again, I fully commend anyone for their optimism, but I just have a really hard time finding much myself as things *currently* stand. Nothing would make me happier than to be wrong, though. I’ll gladly wear it.
I don’t fault anyone for being overly optimistic before last season. In hindsight there were red flags that we all should have probably been more skeptical about, but there’s nothing wrong with fans wanting to get hyped up for a new coach.

I think right now we should all be in full blown rebellion lol. The whole situation is such a farce that I don’t know how anyone can objectively be optimistic about it.

Just saw that it is Petrino. That figures...

At least this has all made my decision easier on not doing season tickets and premium seating. I just cant. Emotionally I cant do it. I feel like everything about this football program as currently constituted is objectionable to me as a fan and alum.

Yet another reason I am not on IC
It is interesting the dichotomy. I wanted Kelly. But this guy is a offensive gurus with rep for doing more with less. Most people are willing to look the other way to their own benefit. Motorcycle deal was over a decade ago. Now we need to find a QB.

I wish I could even attempt to have an open mind and give this is a shot but I can't get there. Petrino is just such a scumbag person and it's really difficult to find any silver lining in his being hired to represent our alma mater. He could coach the offense to score a whole lot of touchdowns and win a whole lot of games and that point would remain true, IMO. Just a really, really disheartening turn of events. Chip Kelly would have been infinitely more palatable for many reasons.

It's not even just the motorcycle thing that is so grotesque about him. I mean, yeah, banging one of your football staffers who is two decades your junior while you're married and then crashing your motorcycle with your mistress is a bad look, no doubt. But it's also the way that he has left almost every single place that he's coached. He is universally reviled almost everywhere by players, staff, and administrators alike. That's going to be like dousing our already smoldering dumpster fire of a football office in kerosine.

I understand that plenty of people will take the "so what, he's a football coach, not a clergyman." That's fine. I don't begrudge anyone for overlooking a multitude of personal and professional transgressions in the name of scoring points on the football field. I just personally don't agree with that mindset. I think character still matters, and I think that it is absolutely possible to win big while maintaining a high standard of character. College sports is professionalized only in the sense that the players make money now, but they're still 18-22 year old young men who should be led by people with character. I'm sure that makes me a prude, but I'm more than comfortable wearing that shoe if it fits.

Can't really argue with any of this

Damn. I would've rather had Kelly. Given Petrino's ability to scheme to the given personnel, I can see why BB went with him. Definitely no excuses next year.

The excuses will be there.

By the way, hiring Petrino should tell you absolutely everything about our morality regarding rules, decorum, etc as compared to those other schools that you presume cheat while thinking we do not.

There are indeed people with a soul who work in Chapel Hill but none of them have any agency to do or say anything. This entire fiasco is run by the worst of us...People you wouldn't trust alone with your kids or your dogs. This football program and broader university admin is the sports equivalent of the Trump administration. "We will shit on your plate, make you eat it, and make you thank us for it because we can".

The whole thing is a gamble. For sake of wins in 2026 i think Petrino makes most sense. If you want hopes of long-term continuity and a little more dignity then Kelly is the move.
