I will avoid quoting Don's story, but you're misrepresenting what he's saying. 10 is roughly the expected number given expected attrition. To go beyond 10 would mean unexpected transfers.
10 is where we are now with no additional attrition. But of course there will be additional attrition. I’d expect us to add at least 20-30 in the portal.

Yea. I just reread. It says 10 now and that goes up with additional attrition. Not sure where the unexpected comes from. Does anyone think that there will not be additional attrition through portal? Players retiring. Whatever. Point being looks to me that all the worry about no room for portal guys was wasted energy.

Portal needs:
  • QB: 1 or 2?
  • OL: 5, 6, 7, 8?
  • WR: 1, 2, 3?
  • Punter: 1?
  • LB: 2 or 3?
  • CB: 1 or 2?
  • Safety: 1 or 2?
  • D-Line: 2 or 3?
  • DE: 1 or 2?
How many do we need and where?

Fuck it, here's what it says...

Including walk-ons, UNC currently has room for four transfers after accounting for recent high school signees, graduating players, and those who have declared for the Transfer Portal. However, based on what I’ve gathered, the more realistic number is around 10 — a figure that would increase further with additional attrition.

It literally says we currently have 4 spots but that, based on what he's gathered, the more realistic number is ~10. To go beyond ~10 would require "additional attrition" beyond what he's gathered we'll likely have.

You used the word unexpected. I'm convinced we're splitting hairs here. 10 now. More to come which is what I said and cal said.

4 now.
~6 more expected based on Don's info (which would have to come from folks expected to transfer/retire but have not yet done so).
More than that would be unexpected based on Don's info.

You are misreading.

The four number is based on 105 cap, but we have grandfathered walkons from the old rule, so we actually have about 111 slots, or 10 available RIGHT NOW. And Mac calculates it at 13

Plus, we are 100% going to get more attrition and that is expected. No one thinks the current roster will stay intact through August.

You're adding info that isn't there and isn't stated to be part of the calculation.

He explains how he got the number...

Including walk-ons, UNC carried 109 players this season (thanks to “grandfather” rules that allow certain walk-ons to not count against the 105 limit). After accounting for 21 graduates and 25 outgoing transfers, UNC currently projects a roster of 62 — leaving room for roughly 43 new additions.

With 39 incoming signees from the Early Signing Period, UNC has room for four transfers at the moment.

The number of "4 now" accounts for grandfathered walk-ons.

Yeah he’s misreading it.

Also, the unexpected refers to a line that the “majority” of the expected transfers have already declared. Well that language would allow for up to an additional 24 portals. I don’t think we will have that number, but we should have at least another 10 attrition between now and August. We always do.

4 + 39 just gets you to 105 from 62.

The point is that due to grandfathered walkons, our cap is not actually 105. Mac calculates it at roughly 114 due to the number of grandfathered walkons. Don’s number may be closer to 111.

Either way, the 4 number is just for 105 and that is not our actual cap due to grandfathering.

If that is the case, then Don did a horrible job explaining his math and the assumption that we currently really have ~10 scholarships available is based on information not made abundantly clear in the story.

Fair enough. Don clarified some of his fuzzy math earlier today: "The two main variables here are departures and which walk-ons count toward the 105. We have an idea of both, but not a solid number."

Regardless of the current number, I think it is a safe assumption that we will pick up at least 20 in the portal this offseason.

I just realized I pulled Don's math explanation from a different article (Inside the Roster: Updated Numbers) by accident.

In that article, he shows that 11 of the 62 Expected Roster in 2026 are believed to be walk-ons, which would leave the following numbers regarding scholarships:

51 current scholarship players
39 scholarship signees

Which means we've used ~90 scholarships and would leave us ~15 scholarships for the portal without further attrition unless we give some walk-ons a scholarship.

Good grief, Don's math helps me understand why some folks hate math.

Point being. All.those worried about huge recruiting class limiting us in portal were wrong. Perhaps BB and Lombo know more than we do. I am glad there has been no mass exodus of players we need. Thompson and House about the only ones. Maybe Gause. Should be interesting two weeks.

Being reported on 247 that Wisconsin QB Billy Edwards will be in chapel Hill on Friday to meet with BB and Petrino - hopefully he's not the only QB target
I am fairly certain there are multiple targets. To me the interesting question is, if you have $6 million budgeted for QB and oline, how do you spend it? I would not be surprised to see them save on QB with the idea petrino can develop anyone and not try to make big splash and spend the money on offensive linemen.

$6 million on QB and then go get more for the Oline.
