Those expecting a flurry of activity on Jan. 2 for UNC have to be disappointed. I was not among them. Just one new portal entry, and one I hate to lose, Alexander, highly regarded freshman LB who did not see the field. Interesting in that we have big hole in LB room. Looks like UNC is moving in on a qb, Edwards guy from Wisconsin, who was hurt all year. Certainly not a splash get, but I suppose Petrino like him. 6-3 and 228 I like. Makes me think the big money is going to Oline. I hope so. Resigned Leroy Jackson and IC says Shipp and Melkart are expected to stay Heels, which would be great news. I do expect things to heat up some now.

We would need Texas Tech’s NIL budget to fill all of the holes on our roster with high level starters from the transfer portal. To your point, those type of players want money but they also want to play at a program that actually looks competitive on the field.
That being said, with our budget I still think it’s possible to build that’s competitive in the ACC next season if we’re smart about it. See a team like Virginia last season as an example. Think it’s more than understandable that most of our fans are taking the wait and see approach to that rather than blindly trusting that the staff can pull it off after what we saw last year.
I am sure I am one seen as blindly trusting this staff. In fact, I have been disappointed in much of what has happened. And after Clemson and the media deluge of what turned out to be a lot of misinformation I was ready to cut bait. It is hard for me to imagine BB and Petrino not putting out a good product if we have talent. To me the biggest surprise has been how BB is building program through HS recruiting given his age. Hoping for some splashes in the portal.

It's truly, truly sad that the optimistic view is that, after spending $15mil+ on staff and many millions more on players, we can have hope that it's "possible to be competitive" in year 2 of this regime.

Sucks that we've made such a huge monetary commitment to football, and it only puts us around a borderline top-25 spender in the sport. I've also never really understood the pov that rev shares would put us closer to the big players in the sport. They also get that rev share money. The House settlement basically only shifts everything vertically, it doesn't do any kind of compression.

Who is responsible for building a talented roster? So why add that caveat? If they don't have the talent it's on them. If they don't put out a good product there is no excuse. This year it was the late start, next year it will be the young roster. We are already coming up with excuses.

I'm sorry. When we have it..we clearly brought in a ton of talent in this HS class. As for next year I want to see on field improvement, continued good recruiting, more discipline on the field and money poring in.

I think it's always been about maximizing the talent your money pool can buy. There is no way, given the amount of money in our pool, that we'll ever have the overall talent of the big players. Any coaching staff at UNC will have to be great at doing that in order for the program to to be consistently good. Different coaches will have different philosophies about how to maximize the talent. It seems that BB/Lombo have decided the best approach under the circumstances is to spend a significant of money on this HS class, treating it as a 2-year HS recruiting cycle, giving a solid base, coach them up, and fill the holes with experienced players from the portal; presumably, then allocating more money to the portal next year.
Yep. I like approach. If team sux next year and we replace BB should be some talent for the next coach to hold onto

I don't think it's 100%, if so then this is way off the rails already, but more of a sign of what is to come. I do think the number being reported by ESPN, 6 million, shows that obtaining a top QB from the portal is unattainable for all but the big players without sacrificing the ability to add many more decent players.

I don't know and I don't care about their cycles or philosophies. I don't follow recruiting (in any sport). I pull for the guys wearing Carolina blue when they walk on the field or the court. I base my opinions on what I see on the field and this year I saw nothing that impressed me.
