Did you see on the field what you expected to see after the hiring of BB? If yes, great. If not, what failed to meet your expectations?
I thought we would win more. Way more with schedule. Looking back I think BB knew we had to shorten games. But we couldn't run ball. No playmakers. Gio got way too much blame. I thought defense was mostly in position. Special teams good until wake. I thought the team didn't quit. The penalties were bad at end but I think that was frustrated players.
I also think BB is making changes and admits to mistakes.

What are your expectations for next year? Im far more skeptical about how this will play out but I’m also more cynical than you so some of my skepticism is organic.

I appreciate these comments Heel79
But you are an addicted glass half full guy I am sort of also.............

Oh nice, I was there too for that game. It was such a bizarre thing. Biggest bowl game for UNC in like 60 years, but played in front of 13,000 people in a Caverness NFL stadium. I so wish we had made it there in a normal year and not in a global pandemic, because that would’ve been an all-time fun party, especially with Texas A&M fans.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like that particular game was a significant inflection point for me as it pertains to my fandom. It was so unbelievably disheartening to have pretty much all of our best players with a few exceptions- like Howell- opt out of the biggest bowl game we had had in decades.
We disagree politically, but damn you’ve been spot on about almost everything about BB. I was way too optimistic about last season so I now tend to rely on your opinions about the program going forward. I’m hopeful but skeptical about next season.

I kinda of laid them out. Most importantly stability, bring in more talent, douse the drama but that is largely out of his control. Will wade is helping. Not going to do an over under on wins I want to see a well coached disciplined team. We saw way too little of that this year. Again, change 3 plays we are 7-5. But we were horrid at times. I actually think there is a lot to celebrate with UNC football now. We got an offensive genius as OC, good recruiting, good portal start, and drama is less, but then I come here and contemplate suicide.

The Orange Bowl used to be a big time bowl. When it’s part of the College Football Playoffs, it still is a big time bowl.

It was a minor unimportant bowl when we played in it.

My opinion won’t do anything to change the existing sentiment that causes your suicidal pondering, but it’s interesting because I know your view is genuine

As I said I think this can work and he can leave a very sturdy foundation. Key is bringing in talent. That seems to be happening. This board only talks about what happened bad and dismisses anything positive.

I guess I just don’t see the talent infusion that you see, especially so far from the portal. HS I see to a degree but I believe time isnt on our side for a 4 year type rebuild.

I expected more discipline and less stupidity on the field.

I didn’t see that.

(middle aged man rant) I hate the concept that now we have to report that college athletes have "re-signed" with a college team. That said, big news that Melkart is coming back. Loved his motor and production. Hopefully we can get a few more motor guys from small schools.

And got a young OL transfer from Baylor, who played a decent bit as a RS freshman last year. Perhaps he wasn't any good, but we need bodies on the OL and you would think he will be in contention for playing time.

We seem to be getting who we want for the most part.

Getting MAJ back is bigger than anything else we could do in the portal. Simply cannot replace or replicate the experience of the ACC sack leader.

The OL from Baylor is a solid pickup, too. My thesis continues to be that OL is the single position group where actual P4 game experience is non-replicable; that is, that in the aggregate FCS or lower level G5 OL typically don’t have enough experience in the physicality that comes in the P4 trenches to be meaningful contributors at the P4 level quickly, if at all. This guy from Baylor started five games this fall and has over 420 snaps of experience in P4 games.

Just got a DB from Michigan State.
We’re building the core of a good defense, sans not having any LB with experience, still worried about our OL recruiting (especially given that’s where Bellichick really started to slip towards the end of his Pats career- some real awful first rounders) but we do look good for the Arkansas OT

I may not get @Peppers49 support on this, but I highly doubt we ever play against Baker at Va Tech (absent very significant QB injuries). My guess is that he transfers again within 2 years (and that really isn't a knock against Baker; most QBs who transfer once into a backup role will transfer again).
I posted in this thread back when Baker initially transferred that the math wasn’t adding up with Newkirk/Baker as rising sophomores, highly rated Burgess coming in as a freshman, + targeting a QB or two from the transfer portal, and that losing 1 of those 3 was probably inevitable at some point in the next few seasons. I just personally really liked the idea of Baker at least competing for the starting spot next season and think that the staff should have found a way to keep him if they weren’t going to get a surefire starter from the portal. Understand not everyone feels that way.

I do think there’s a good chance that we could find a serviceable QB between either the 2 transfers or Newkirk. Will be an interesting position battle.

Oh. I absolutely believe that we should have been playing the freshmen after Clemson. The season was lost at that point and we needed to discover how each could perform in actual game situations. Unfortunately, Bill didn’t ask my opinion.

Any thoughts on portal? I'm thinking solid. IC has story ilon us going after two OSU players. Olineman with 3 years left. Played several games. Did two year mission so probably already 22 or so. TE with one year. Has played in 33 games. Most of time IC does story like this we get the commit.
