Was Belichick a good NFL draft guru?

Or was he better with going after proven NFL players in free agency or the waiver wire?

My point is this - is he a good talent evaluator? We know his GM is not a good talent evaluator. No one in the NFL or college wanted to hire Mike Lombardi to evaluate or sign talent.
I think you can find clips of Nick Saban saying BB best evaluator of talent he has seen. I saw him say that. BB was saying not me you are nick.

The portal process has played out about like I had expected. The fact that we presumably spent a ton of our NIL budget on the 40 man recruiting class (still extremely skeptical about that strategy) coupled with how poor the product on the field last season looked meant that we were never realistically going to convince a bunch of proven P4 starters to transfer here.

That’s not to say that you can’t still put together a solid roster with “bargain bin” portal signings. Just have to hope the staff did a much better job evaluating players than they did last season.

I’m getting closer. Same for basketball. Hubert’s style of bball has sucked a ton of joy out of it for me.

In regards to football, we did very similarly to last year in the portal. We maybe upgraded at QB. TE is better. OL is a huge concern. Petrino will have to mask a bad OL without real difference makers at the skill position. It’ll be better than this year cause it would be impossible not to be, but like mediocre at best. losing 2 of our top 3 DT is a problem, I think we only have 1 guy older than a sophomore in that rotation now. Needed a corner, hopefully the USF guy comes. LB isn’t great.
All that, and the schedule is much harder.
6 wins would be a miracle.
Agree 💯. Yeah, let's just say that "Indiana" ain't happening in Chapel Hill anytime soon - lol

I won’t speak for anyone else but my personal perspective on this is, it’s going to be a very worrisome day when I no longer feel passionate enough or care enough to comment on or critique our football program. We’re getting closer and closer with each passing season but we aren’t there yet. So until then, I plan to keep expressing my honest viewpoint on how I think things are going, and will continue to cheer for the team, hope the team wins and succeeds. And I really enjoy this thread because I think there are lots of reasonable, rational, knowledgeable folks on here whose opinions I value and enjoy.
Could be just that you're getting older and have kids now.

I think part of 79's point is that the constant criticizing is just boring at this point. Everyone is saying the same thing 10x, 20x, 100x.

In the basketball thread, CF must have used the phrase "the best possible shot" dozens of times (saying that HD's offense fails to obtain it, though the best possible shot is quite a high bar). Or "I just don't understand why we are doing [fill in the blank]." Post after post of the same boring criticism.

My response is to skim this threads and not get too deep; I just don't understand why we would have a 310 page thread still kicking in January, but anyway I don't think 79 is wrong here. And I also agree with him that relentless pessimism is unfun.

I think fans can be positive.

I think fans can be negative.

Both are understandable perspectives.

But if you don’t join me in wanting to win the Duke’s Mayo Bowl so we can all see Coach Belichick take the mayo bath, then please get the hell out of our fan base because you are not a real Carolina Football fan.

idk man i'm finding 79's Pollyanna-ing a lot more repetitive than the actual, reasoned perspectives on this thread that happen to all end up pessimistic because we've got a pair of absolute hucksters at the helm of UNC football.

Point to such a post. Should not be hard.

79 says the stuff I want to say

Heels get OLineman Shaq McRoy. Well named at 6-8, 344, that is huge. Former 4 star who went to oregon intially. Top 100 guy. Played some at Arkansas this year for Petrino. Had three years left. Obviously followed Petrino. Lot to l ike about this one, position of need, size, fact he followed Petrino.

"played some at Arkansas this year for Petrino" i mean come on - he played 57 snaps, 40 of them in the first two weeks where his team won by a combined score of 108-21. you intentionally make it sound like he was a part-time contributor rather than buried on the bench until garbage time. you're painting silver linings on a mushroom cloud.

Personally I'm not convinced WR is better. Junior Shipp is theoretically an upgrade over Soph Shipp, and Kekahuna/Sadler seem likely to give good production in the slot, but the second outside receiver position is a huge question mark.
That's fair. Paysour could be missed but i'm kinda thinking Kekahuna can match his production. And Sadler then is my slight upgrade over Vari Green / Alex Taylor / Culliver just due to more explosiveness and juking. Neither is guaranteed, but holy smokes if we can't be better then what a sad state.

I guess I just don’t understand why those of us who don’t hold the rosiest of views of current leadership of our football program, are not allowed to express those views, even in a civil and respectful manner, without being accused of being negative or having it implied that our fandom or support of the team/program is somehow lesser. That’s exactly what happens on this thread: one of us makes a statement questioning the efficacy of certain decisions or certain personnel acquisitions or losses, and we are accused of being negative. It’s been happening for months now.

Speaking for myself, I have never just said that Belichick sucks or that Lombardi sucks or that Carolina football sucks ‘just because’. I have never provided commentary that I don’t agree with the current leadership and direction of our football program without providing thoughtful, reasonable, honest analysis of why I feel the way that I do. I have stood by my opinion and viewpoint from day one, last year in December 2024, when I said all of the reasons why I did not like the hire, did not agree with it, and all of the reasons why I thought it would not work. Not one single solitary thing about which I expressed concern or reservation, has turned out any differently than I projected it would. Not one. Hell, if anything, I was *too* optimistic! Imagine that! I predicted on this very thread that we would go 8-4 this past year!

Mims to A&M.... sigh. Well at least it is Texan money stealing him and not a more pedestrian, smaller acc-sized "bag" that he left for.

No. The point was that petrino was familiar with him and wanted him. That's what you got?
