"his guys" could be commentary on his own personnel dept since half his personnel dept showed up with zero college experience. He is probably referring to both coaches and players.
They have a similar hire date, but Dickert brought in starting players from WSU and portal players that were ID'd by his personnel dept (which came with him from WSU - Coach Dickert Names Trio of Leadership Positions on Football Staff - Wake Forest University Athletics - the gms, scouts, budget people, etc all followed him). I'd actually expect Dickert to have a more talented team which was put together in winter portal instead of half in winter and half in spring because of these reasons.

It was a self-inflicted choice to not retain Mack's personnel folks or hire-away a college-ready GM but your hire-date comparison feels like it hides this.
I hear you, but the fact that we as UNC fans have to do any tap-dancing around semantics around whether or not a HOF Super Bowl winning coach hired by the University of North Carolina should need more or less time to assemble a roster capable of beating a first-year coach at Wake Forest, speaks volumes and not in a good way.

The guy's just a dick and always has been. I'll admit that I've never liked him ever since he first became famous as the Patriots head coach, and while I'll always pull for UNC I'm just never going to change my mind about him personally. The Patriots cheating scandals, the way he handles himself in public, the support for Trump, the Jordon Hudson mess - he's just not a very likeable or decent guy, imo. And my sense from the beginning of his hire has been that he's taking UNC for a ride, not just for himself but for his sons and NFL buddies who now make up his staff. Hopefully there are major improvements this coming season, but I have my doubts. And I guess I'll just leave it at that until the season actually starts.

Does the Hubert firing tie our hands should Year 2 go south for BB? I mean how much can we pay coaches not to coach? Serious question.

Spending within our Budget is no longer a restraint

Great question. It's definitely one of my least favorite things about college sports these days, the ungodly amounts of money that are tied up in coaching contract buyouts.

On the bright side, Brad Stevens has no buyout. wink wink, har har.

ETA- i assume an NBA gm wouldn't have a buyout, but have no idea cuz i'm just bs'ing

Stevens is already out so he won't be eating up that north of $70M contract.

Belichick’s buyout after this season isn’t prohibitively expensive compared to some of the gaudy numbers you see in other coach’s contracts.

Personally, I think if Belichick can’t make a bowl game this season then the angst from both fans and donors will reach a boiling point similar to what we just saw on the basketball side where giving the coach another season isn’t tenable and would be more damaging than just biting the bullet and paying the buyout.

Just speculation on my part though. My sense is that UNC donors have deep pockets and will pony up when push comes to shove, but you never know where the line gets drawn. Even their money isn’t limitless.
