Duke did the same for any community member not a citizen.
Yep, that came out Friday.

Now scrambling to fill some time for our youngest. He's working a basketball camp (Academy) and then has a summer internship that starts in June. Will probably send him for a couple of weeks to visit a cousin or something.

I'm in the middle of basketball season, so I can't go up til July...maybe.

American Citizen rounded up by ICE. Still consider it an overreaction?

A U.S.-born American citizen was being detained at the request of immigration authorities Thursday despite an advocate showing his U.S. birth certificate in court and a county judge finding no reason for him to be considered an “illegal alien” who illegally entered Florida.

Juan Carlos Gomez-Lopez, 20, was arrested Thursday evening by Florida Highway Patrol and charged under a state immigration law that has been temporarily blocked since early this month. Details of Gomez-Lopez’s arrest and detention were first reported by the Florida Phoenix news site.

After inspecting his birth certificate, Leon County Judge LaShawn Riggans said during the hearing that “this is indeed an authentic document,” but that she did not have jurisdiction beyond finding no probable cause for the charge.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s role is to enforce immigration laws that generally apply to noncitizens. American citizens are protected under the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution from unreasonable search and seizure, arrest and detention.

Nonetheless, he remains detained locally at ICE’s request, said Thomas Kennedy, a spokesperson at the Florida Immigrant Coalition who attended Thursday’s hearing.

“Everything tracks for him being sent to an ICE detention center,” he told NBC News in a phone interview.

NBC News has reached out to state and federal authorities for comment.
Terrible. US customs and border has always had major 4th and 5th amendment problems that I don't agree with but this is worse. Get the kid a phone call to get his documents. If the documents don't come, you've lost the time it takes to give him a phone call. If the documents do come, you avoid kidnapping a citizen and shipping them to Mexico.

I think the lawsuits will start flying and the administration will lose more than they win but I also think this will hurt him politically. Sure there are some racists out there that don't mind anything bad happening to brown people, but the vast majority of Republicans, including the majority of Hispanic men that voted for trump, make a big distinction between citizens and illegal aliens.

Sounds like Customs officers had the right to deport these two (whether or not they would have done so in otherwise identical circumstances four months ago I do not know), but the kind of thing is getting more attention as the Trump Admin has a deportation standoff with the courts.

The thing is, this requirement started in 2019 … not sure if extent to which it has been enforced since then.

Long visa appointment wait times combined with harsher regulations implemented by President Donald Trump could make it more difficult for soccer fans to make it to the United States next year for the World Cup.

There may be slightly less than 500 days until the U.S. hosts the 2026 World Cup, in tandem with Canada and Mexico, but that’s not enough time for soccer fans from Brazil, Colombia and Turkey to obtain tourism visas, according to global visa wait times.

Appointments for B-1 and B-2 visas – tourism visas that are required for fans attending the games – can take anywhere from 600 to 700 days for those countries. People from India, the United Arab Emirates, Peru and Honduras could face a wait of more than 400 days.

The long wait times are caused, in part, by a massive backlog in the U.S. immigration system.

I'm already on record that both the World Cup and the Olympics should be pulled from the US. We are not a trustworthy international partner for such an event.

FIFA’s last World Cup site used slave labor that they worked to death. Before that it was Putins Russia. They don’t care about putting on matches in fascist countries.

FIFA and its board/leaders and the International Olympic Committee care about getting their bribes.

U.S. border patrol officers have been setting up extra checkpoints near crossings between the U.S. and Metro Vancouver.

In an unusual scene, vehicles in the U.S. that are heading north to Canada through the Peace Arch and Pacific Highway crossings are sometimes being stopped by U.S. border patrol before they leave the country and arrive at Canadian customs. In some cases, it has added hours to crossing times.

"They stopped and they asked us to open everything up," said David Crosby, a U.S. resident who crossed into British Columbia on Tuesday in his vehicle.

OMG. What a fucking idiot. FIFA doesn't need to move on from North America; it should just only use Canadian and Mexican venues. Problem is that this new absolutely nonsensical expansion, there's no way Mexico and Canada have sufficient capacity this late in the game.

That was quite possibly the least funny "joke" I've ever heard.

BTW, I guarantee you that the USMNT doesn't advance. I mean, the team's not good, but even if the team is, the refs and the opposing players will not let them. Refs are going to let the opponents get away with way more. I predict red cards for Team USA and possibly injuries.

Pretty standard requirement from US consulates around the world.

My question has always been how that can me missed in the wrong hands. The consulate has a high quota in power and doesn't explain reasons of rejection.

This stupid plan to harass and threaten visitors to our Country is so beyond the pale that I can’t understand it. Why? Millions of people who want to come and spend their money here. See how great our Country is. Do we still want Foreigners to admire the US and want to work with us or do we believe that threats work better?

It’s Trump. He definitely favors threats.

An Irish woman who was detained by US immigration authorities because of a criminal record dating back almost 20 years has been released after 17 days in custody.

Cliona Ward, 54, who has lived legally in the US for decades, emerged on Wednesday from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) facility at Tacomain Washington.

After visiting her sick father in Ireland she had been detained at San Francisco airport on 21 April, causing an outcry in Ireland and the US and a campaign for her release.

Last week a California judge agreed to an application for the original convictions to be formally overturned in a manner that would be recognised at a federal level, paving the way for her release, according to Ward’s lawyers.

...

Ward is originally from Dublin and moved as a child to the US where she obtained a green card, attended the University of California, in Santa Cruz, now works for a non-profit, pays taxes and cares for a chronically ill son who is a US citizen, according to Holladay.

A criminal record for drug possession and misdemeanours from 2007 and 2008 was expunged at state level but not federal, which put her in the crosshairs of Donald Trump’s crackdown on documented as well as undocumented immigrants.

Earlier this year Ward accompanied her stepmother to Ireland to visit her father, who has dementia, and upon returning to the US was stopped at Seattle airport on 19 March and held for three days.

She was released to obtain documentation about the partially expunged convictions and presented them to Ice officials at San Francisco airport on 21 April, after which she was again detained, said Holladay.

US Citizen in this case.

Hasan Piker, the biggest progressive political streamer in America, was detained by Customs and Border Protection for hours of questioning upon returning to the U.S. from a trip to France this weekend. Piker posted about the incident on X and later talked about it on stream.

He was detained in Chiago and questioned for two hours about protected journalistic activities like who he’s interviewed and his political beliefs. He was asked whether or not he’d interviewed Hamas, Houthis, or Hezbollah members. He was questioned about his opinions on Trump and Israel and asked about his history of bans on Twitch. His phone and laptop were not confiscated.

"They straight up tried to get something out of me that I think they could use to basically detain me permanently,” Piker said on stream following the incident. “… [the agent] kept saying stuff like, do you like Hamas? Do you support Hamas? Do you think Hamas is a terror group or a resistance group?”

“I kept repeating the same statement over and over again,” Piker said. “I kept saying... I'm on the side of civilians. I want the endless bloodshed to end. I am a pacifist. I want wars to end… which is insane because up until this moment. If you were to say as an American citizen, you stand 10 toes down with Hamas, or you stand 10 toes down with the Houthis, they can’t deny you entry into the country for that shit.”

“DHS flagging and detaining one of the U.S.’s largest left-wing voices for their political opinions while the Trump admin suggests they might suspend habeas corpus does not portend well for the future,” said lawyer and content creator Alex Peter.

Isn’t this what our enemies would like?
