"U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani blocked the Trump administration in a three-page order Tuesday from moving Ozturk outside the District of Massachusetts without providing notice."

did they move her to louisiana before this happened?
I don't know. I mean, you're not wrong -- they are playing a dangerous game. But right now, it feels more like footsie than actual court defiance.

they appear to be seriously testing the limits and they seem to have been in what we could call partial defiance multiple times now (claiming prisoners were already in the air when court orders were issued, etc.)

......they definitely took her to to louisiana. i don't know whether it was before or after the court order forbidding it or whether or not she's back in Massachusetts now.

is there some sort of corrective/timeliness remedy when they do stuff in defiance of court orders?

not sure if this is the right thread for this, have we talked about this one yet?

Yes, in the current events thread but might make sense for someone to start a Grad Student being disappeared by US government thread at this point …

This administration is filled with heartless fuckheads top to bottom. Hey assholes, use the google to check what a tattoo means before you throw someone in a cell.
I’m sure you know this, but this isn’t a matter of oversight or of a lack of investigation. This is purposeful. They don’t give a shit about what any tattoo means. They don’t give a shit whether these people have committed crimes. They don’t give a shit if these people are members of any gang.

It’s all subterfuge to expedite the removal of any and all brown immigrants, regardless of legal status.

You’ve got a green card and are in grad school? Oh, fuck you, we’ll disappear your ass.

You’re on TPS holding down a job and contributing to the local economy? Fuck you, get out.

You’ve applied for asylum and are waiting for your court date? See you in El Salvador, fucko.

“… Brinkema rebuked government officials for claiming in court that the couple posed a public threat and ordered both of them released straight from the courthouse.

… Attorneys for the Venezuelan couple said they were detained March 21 as they were driving in Suitland, Maryland, with their 4-year-old son, arguing that the move was a violation of their temporary protected status and due-process rights under the Constitution.

Another judge in the District of Columbia previously ordered their release after they were first arrested March 10 as they arrived home from their jobs as hotel custodians, with their young children watching. Advocates worried the aggressive move signaled that the administration was again willing to separate parents from their kids. …”

Trump blocked from deporting migrants to countries where they’re not citizens

A federal judge said deportees must first have a “meaningful opportunity” to seek humanitarian protection in the United States.

“A federal judge in Boston issued a temporary emergency order blocking the Trump administration from sending anyone with a final deportation order to a country where they are not a citizen without first giving them a “meaningful opportunity” to seek humanitarian protection in the United States.

As the Trump administration struggles to carry out the largest mass deportation campaign in U.S. history, the decision from U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy on Friday marks the third time in less than two weeks that a court has blocked or slowed those efforts. It follows threats from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem this week that anyone in the United States illegally could be swept away to El Salvador and imprisoned in one of the nation’s sprawling prisons. …”

FLASHBACK!! “ SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 2020 — NC Republicans Say We Need Mexican Immigrants — Unemployment claims recently hit record levels at both the national and state levels. People need jobs. This would be the time when they would work in agriculture, right? It's steady work and easy to find. Right?

No.

North Carolina conservatives successfully called on the federal government to unfreeze visa restrictions for immigrant workers. There is, in fact, a "labor shortage" at the a time of rapidly rising unemployment. There can be no better proof that there is no "stealing" of jobs going on here. Americans would rather be unemployed than work in agriculture.

Not only that, but immigrants are--as the Republican lawmakers say--an essential part of this country's food supply chain. I would think that would put them in an exalted category, something to be honored. Right?” H/T to Greg Weeks for this-from his always informative and much missed blog on Latin American Politics, “Two Weeks Notice.”

Wait, a jumpman tattoo is considered evidence of belonging to a Venezuelan gang? Seriously? Seriously? A tattoo of MJ in flight, over the #23, is a gang symbol and sufficient proof for deportation?

Oh my god. Again, we are reminded: there's no bottom with these people. They do things that I have trouble even imagining that a sentient person would do.

U.S. Has Spent $40 Million to Jail About 400 Migrants at Guantánamo

The disclosure of the tab so far came after five senators visited the offshore operation, which they condemned as a waste of resources.

“… The Defense Department advised Congress that as of March 12, the Guantánamo migrant operation had cost $39.3 million, according to congressional aides, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because Pentagon and congressional communications are considered sensitive. That estimate covered a six-week period when the Trump administration had moved 290 migrants through there, including 177 Venezuelans who were repatriated.

The daylong Senate trip on Friday was a low-profile event compared with ones by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, who each brought news photographers with them. But just like during their visits, the senators were there when the administration flew in a small number of migrants: 13 Nicaraguans from an ICE facility in Louisiana. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, described them as “gang members.” …”

Joe Rogan: ‘Horrific’ innocent people could be swept up in deportations to El Salvador

“Podcaster Joe Rogan said it’s “horrific” that innocent people could be getting swept up in the Trump administration’s effort to deport gang members and send them to El Salvador’s notoriously dangerous mega-prison.

Rogan, in a podcast released Saturday, praised Trump for lowering the number of illegal migrant crossings at the U.S. southern border, but he expressed concern that the Trump administration’s policy of deporting people it claims to be affiliated with gangs could be targeting non-criminals.

… Rogan pointed to recent reporting about several people not affiliated with gangs getting sent to the mega-prison because they had tattoos and were not given the chance to defend themselves before a judge. He mentioned specifically an example of the “gay barber.”

“It’s horrific. It’s horrific,” said Rogan, who landed an interview with Trump during last year’s presidential race seen as important in the Republican nominee’s efforts to win over young male voters.

Rogan agreed with his podcast guest, political commentator Konstantin Kisin, who said, “a human being, being plucked out of nowhere and ending up in a country he’s never been in, in a maximum-security prison with gang members, seems like a bad thing to happen.” …”
