US State Department settles lawsuit claiming Biden-era suppression of conservative news​

  • Settlement bars State Department from funding tools that suppress speech of Americans, media outlets
  • Plaintiffs allege Biden-era efforts suppressed conservative media on topics like COVID-19 and elections
  • Settlement would remain in effect until 2036
........Both cases stemmed from claims by President Donald Trump and other Republicans that the government under Democratic former President Joe Biden encouraged the suppression of speech by conservatives on social media platforms such as Twitter, now known as X.

Those claims often stemmed from efforts by the Democratic president's administration to combat what it said were false claims and misinformation about vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic and elections.

......Wednesday's settlement resolves claims that the State Department violated the free speech protections of the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment by funding and promoting tools used by social media companies to "deplatform" and render unprofitable "disfavored" news outlets.

The plaintiffs said it did so through two organizations that received grants or contracts from the department's Global Engagement Center, which had ‌been authorized ⁠to counter foreign "propaganda and disinformation."

It should be no surprise that you have again misidentified what a legal case is about. you could just ask someone, you know. Anyway, this whole affair is idiotic. The government did nothing wrong, as evidenced by the absence of any damages. They got some stupid bullshit injunctive relief that will be abandoned by the next administration. Getting the injunctive release allows the plaintiffs to claim attorneys fees, and that's part of the settlement but "recorded separately" so who knows how much it is.

Basically, overall just a grift. In fairness, it's one that plaintiffs' attorneys use regardless of ideology. If you've ever gotten a form for a class action settlement that awards you something trivial for some violation maybe you didn't even know about -- i.e. like when Netflix was sued back in the DVD days because mail delays meant that it was never actually "all you can watch," and everyone got to have an extra DVD out for like 3 months. Yeah, why did that suit get filed? Because a plaintiffs' attorney planned to settle it, give some nonsense remedy to the class and pocket $1M for themselves or more.

This settlement is very likely just a way for the government to fund Erin Hawley's litigation outfit.

Biden’s administration tried to save lives by pressuring social media companies to get rid of right-wing content that was literally responsible for tens of thousands of needless deaths.

Trump’s administration has tried to pressure media companies to get rid of true speech that makes Trump feel bad.

These administrations are not the same.

So you believe that Covid vaccines contain microchips and that Donald Trump won the 2020 Presidential election? Because those are not "far right" beliefs....they are mainstream Republican talking points that the Biden administration attempted to shut down.

Those two things aren't comparable. One is the definition of crazy and the other isn't.
