IMO it’s possible to believe both that Maduro was a tinpot dictator who deserved to be removed from power, and also that unauthorized military action without Congressional approval to depose a foreign head of state on sovereign foreign soil is an immensely troubling development. It’s also entirely within the realm of possibility (probability?) given this administration’s ignominious track record that there is no well thought-on plan or strategy for post-Maduro Venezuela, nor is there a plan or strategy for what will be a certain response from China. That’s alarming as we have probably unwittingly given China the formal opening for making a similar move on Taiwan.

Also troubling is that this is a continuation of the typical Republican pattern of the last three Republican presidential administrations putting us into an economic recession while simultaneously launching a war for oil.

Trump just gave a green light to China for Taiwan and to Russia for Moldova or Estonia or Latvia or wherever he decides to invade beyond Ukraine. The US has no moral authority to oppose lawless aggression by other authoritarian countries.

There is a certain irony in that the key distinction of the Maduro/Venezuela action versus Taiwan, Moldova, etc. is that Maduro was not legitimately in power — he lost the last election and rejected the results. He succeeded (in remaining in power despite losing the election) where Trump failed in a similar attempt to override election results in the USA in 2020.
