Look at state funding for public schools (per FTE) over the last 50 years.
Yes, that is a significant issue., too. Does not explain the significant private tuition costs increase (except perhaps, that the competition charging more helps the private schools to charge more).

Private schools are an entirely different beast. The listed tuition is well above what the average students pay. These data are readily available. Full pay students are subsidizing low-middle income students. I know a couple dozen students that went to elite private colleges for less than what they would have paid at OoS publics. These were not poor kids. Their parents are engineers, professors, accountants, lawyers even doctors. At many the family income cutoff for FinAid is above $200k.
