washer and dryer recommendations

We have a LG front-load washer and dryer that are about 16 years old. The washer is starting to leak, but I haven't been able to figure out from where yet. The filter is clean, so my guess is that years' of gunk and wear and tear have taken their toll.

Thoughts or recommendations on a replacement (brands, models, etc.)? I hate how our front-load has a mildew-y appearance and is hard to keep clean. Have they gotten better in that regard in the last decade, or is a top-load the way to go?

I don't necessarily want to get a dryer too since the dryer still appears to be working ok. Do stores offer discounts if you buy them together at the same time?

Whatever you do, get a warranty. Everything is piece of crap these days.

My only recommendation is to not buy any appliances made by Samsung.

My .02 only. Our kids have both purchased homes in the past couple of years, and one thing we did was get each of them a washer/dryer. We live in a rural area, and when I was asking the dude at Lowes about washers/dryers, his first question was "where do they live?" He said his reasoning for asking is that the smaller the town of residence, the less repair services were available for the machines that had a lot of push button/digital features over the more basic machines that work via the turnable knobs. The larger the city/area, the more services would be available for the highly computerized models. So, we went with Whirlpool machines for both of our kids; top loading washer and front loading dryer that didn't have a bunch of electronic features, and they have been top notch for both of them.

They’re the Chrysler of appliances. Several nice looking models, packed with features, but constructed of duct tape, tin sheets, and knob and tube. At the same time, you very well could get one that lasts 100,000 miles.

lol…they know that shit is gonna break.

I've enjoyed our Bosch front load washer and dryer (believe it is Series 6). I've had my latest for about 5 years. It replaced an earlier Bosch version and the newer version is much improved. I'd say after your 16 year use you're ready for a new one.

We have a new GE front loader washer. Works great. They've figured out how to better vent the washer so that you don't get the same mildewy smell that plagued front loaders in the past. We've also used LG front load washers in a few projects recently.

My recommendation was going to be the one with the least amount of electronic crap on it. My father-in-law recently got a GE refrigerator with great reviews and the control panels for the fancy ice and water dispenser stopped working within a week. It’s under warranty but between shipping parts and scheduling the repair it’ll be 6 weeks before it’s fixed. We just got a new dishwasher that works fine but has the option to connect to wifi. I didn’t even look into why because there’s no way I want to mess with that.

We’ll need a new fridge soon and I told my wife I’m just going to get the most basic, off-white, freezer on top garage fridge I can find instead of any fancy stainless bells and whistles bullshit.

All I'll add to this conversation is that I have been told by multiple people I trust over the years (including someone who works at a Home Depot) not to buy Samsung appliances, because (to quote one of the people) "they're shit products". I've heard that numerous times over the past fifteen or so years. As I have never bought a Samsung appliance (I once owned a Samsung TV back in the 90s, and it was OK but not the greatest quality picture) I can't say from firsthand experience.

I think Samsung TVs are awesome. But I have heard their appliances are crappy.

Same here. The TV I owned was back in the 90s so I'm sure they've gotten better since then. I do own a Samsung cellphone and it works fine. And I've heard the same as you - the people I've talked to about Samsung said their cellphones and similar devices are good, but it's their appliances that suck.

I used to never buy the warranties. But now days with all of the expensive electronic controls they do make sense.

in 2015 I purchased a Fridg, dishwasher, microwave, and stove package. They were offering all kinds of discounts, so I ended up with the warranty on everything for $300. Damn did it pay for itself. Had 9 combined service calls, mostly the crappy dishwasher. I was talking with the tech on the first visit, he told me that one visit would have been around $250, considering the parts, so I got a good deal on the warranty.

Now, I'm old and will get them for peace of mind.

I have a Samsung washer and dryer, 11 years old, the washer has never had any issues other than it's showing some wear. Had to fix the dryer in the first 2 years basically because of a very poorly designed part, made of plastic, that wore out. The replacement part was metal and the part that moved was on a ball bearing, not plastic on plastic like the original. It's been pretty good ever since. But it is noisy.

Yep...keep it simple. How many features does one need on a washer and dryer. Same with microwave ovens. I don't think I have owned any brand of Washer/Dryer other than Whirlpool. Maybe a Kenmore which would have been same. As to warranties ... a Sears service manager told me that 75 percent of appliance warranties sold were never used.

Don’t have a recommendation, but I do have a funny story. When I was a kid we moved back and forth between Hickory and Fayetteville. We were living in a housing development in Fayetteville when I was in the fourth grade. The land was almost, but not quite flat. Our backyard was the low point. So, when we got a hard rain, the water drained into our backyard creating a shallow pool. It had rained hard one day, and our backyard was flooded the next day. My mom had washed a load of clothes. Since she didn’t have a dryer, she put the clothes in a basket and started her trip to the clothes line. She caught her foot on something and stumbled. The basket fell into the dirty water. She had to wring the clothes out and rewash them. When my father got home, she informed him he was going to buy her a dryer or a row boat. They went to Sears on Saturday and she got her dryer.

I like Maytag.

We got a Samsung washer 10-12 years ago, and honestly, it sucked. I had to replace a PCB and something down at the motor (don't remember what). Shortly thereafter, it got to the point that it didn't spin-dry the clothes very well, so I took it to the dump. We owned it no more than 5 years. We replaced it with a Maytag to match our dryer. Both have been great.

As far as electronics go, I have had Samsung phones for years with no issues. I got a Samsung TV off of CraigsList for my porch a few years ago, again, no issues. So I suppose my experience is pretty common: My Samsung appliance sucked; my Samsung electronics are fine.
