Well, I have to put a 4 at the start of my age now..

No I didn’t start this thread so you could shower me with birthday wishes. Truthfully, this is not a birthday I’m thrilled about.

Anyway, I just googled what age you’re supposed to get a colonoscopy and saw it’s actually 45 but I’ve started to think about things I should perhaps do/pay more attention to as I’ve reached this dreaded milestone. I gather that I’m probably on the younger side of things here so I turn to your collective wisdom and sage advice if you could perhaps impart upon me any life experience that I should consider.

My youngest child turns 40 in November.

As far as advice, my life has had so many ups and downs, I feel like a yoyo. The only thing I really learned is that if you get up every morning with the goal of handling that day better than the day before, you can keep going.
 
After my grandmother died, I moved in with my grandfather so he wouldn't be lonely in his home. Absolutely one of the best things that happened to me in my entire life. All of the peak years of me being a complete A**-H*** teenager were spent living with someone who had literally seen it all before and laughed at how the more the world changes, the more it stays the same. On my grandfather's 80th birthday we held a big party for him and folks came from far and near to celebrate his life. That night when it was just him and me, alone, in his house, I asked him, "Which did you enjoy more, the first 40 or the second 40?" He laughed and laughed, then laughed some more at me. Finally he said, "Only someone under 40 would ask that question. My first 40 years, all I did was worry. I worried about who/what I would become. I worried about getting/keeping a job. I worried about getting married. I worried about my children. I worried about saving enough money for retirement. I worried about the country and the world. All I did was worry and--worst of all--I worried about things I couldn't control or change." Then he went on, "After 40, I have been much more accepting of the things I can't change or control, which is most of my life. The second forty was immeasurably better than the first forty." Then he laughed and said, "Not sure about the next 40."
 
Yeah. My 40s were a couple of unfortunate milestones. I remember in my late 40s looking in the mirror and actually saying man that guy is old. I also thought about a time in high school when I was looking at my friend's dad and thinking he was old. He was younger than I am when I thought that. I also remember that this was a decade when I started filling out the doctor's form when they asked what medicines you were taking and going from zero to three.

But not all bad. Still in good shape and healthy. Still happily married to number one. Making good money. Kids are pretty sane and progressing well academically. Cut way down on my drinking. Can't complain but I'm sure I will.
 
My mom used to tell us she was 29 on her birthday until we asked her how she kept turning 29 every year - point being, for her 30 was the dreaded milestone that signified she's was getting old. I never even thought about it when I turned 40 or 50 (much less 30), but I'll be 60 in September and I have to admit, I'm not looking forward to this one. I'm not freaking out or anything, or even mildly worried or discomfited about it, but I have to admit there's something about 60 that seems like a threshold that none of the others ever did. I'm sure I won't feel any different on my birthday or afterwards, but damn, 60...

Colonoscopies are not a big deal just make sure the doctor has big hands, it's more enjoyable.

My oldest turns 29 this year.

I turned 45 in my last birthday and had to do a colonoscopy. The only miserable part is the prep, but a tip is to start the liquid diet 3-4 days in advance so the last night isn't too bad. The procedure itself was painless and it was the best nap I've ever had lol

You know none of my milestone Bdays bothered me one iota-until I was 70

So many jokes about women's age. A friend used to say "I'm celebrating the XXth anniversary of my 29th birthday ".

My uncle is going to be 90 in December. Still married, still drives, goes to church and his grandson's ballgames, works in the yard and keeps a garden, sharp as a tack. Gives me hope...

Yep. Actually had a colonoscopy and endoscopy together. Didn’t know either was done when I woke up. My ride took me straight to iHop when I was done. Ordered a lot ha.
 
50 is where I really started to fill old. Now my youngest is 20 and I feel older than ever.

Of course the activities of this past weekend had me feeling young again, well until the very end. But either way great weekend.
