The entire West Coast.

8.7 mag is huge. Would be 7th largest ever recorded by instrument.

I think how the ocean floor shifts in an earthquake determines if a tsunami will follow. If the floor slides horizontally there is little threat of a tsunami. If one of the plates moves downward the threat is also small. It’s when one of the plates shifts upward that the risk of a dangerous tsunami becomes more likely.

Authorities warn of possible damage along Hawaii coastlines

The warning said the danger can continue for many hours after the initial tsunami wave as subsequent waves arrive. The first wave may not be the largest, it warned.

“Tsunami waves efficiently wrap around islands. All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face,” it said. “Debris picked up and carried by a tsunami amplifies its destructive power.”

The estimated arrival time in Hawaii of the first tsunami wave is 7:17 p.m. local time (1:17 a.m. ET), the weather service said
