Let’s be blunt. It can be hard to voice uncomfortable truths, but here is one: most people living in the United States today—certainly more than half—are not Americans in any meaningful sense of the term.

MAGA hears that and thinks immediately of illegal immigration. But actually, the problem is bigger. It extends to the many native-born people who may technically be citizens of the United States but are no longer (if they ever were) Americans. They do not believe in, live by, or even like the principles, traditions, and ideals that until recently defined America as a nation and as a people. It is not obvious what we should call these citizen-aliens, these non-American Americans; but they are something else.

Practically speaking, it might be too late. There is almost nothing left to conserve. What is actually required now is a recovery, or even a refounding, of America as it was long and originally understood but which now exists only in the hearts and minds of a minority of citizens.

The 2028 election will be do or die. A GOP presidency will be pedal-to-the-metal on their entire agenda, plus items few of us have yet even imagined.. Nor is even that the worst. It will be coupled with a level of vindictive persecution against resistance and dissent hitherto not seen in the supposedly liberal West. We see this already in the censorship practiced by the new mainstream media. The shameless propaganda tidal wave. The personal destruction campaigns. We see it inthe flagrant use of the DOJ to torment political opponents, the gaslighting denials, and the collective shrug by everyone else.

They are unable to comprehend and deal with anything that is different than them. Anyone that is not a straight white Christian extremist is outside the bubble they want to live in. Even though someone being black, or Latino, or gay, or trans, or Muslim, or atheist doesn't affect their lives in any way, they don't understand it. Because they don't understand it, they fear it. Because they fear it, they hate it. It is all about racism and bigotry, and the fear of losing their "place" in society if everyone that is different than them is treated as equals.

The second president of the USA signed the Alien and Sedition Acts. Our own Constitution counted some people as 3/5ths of a person. MAGA has always been a part of the USA. That said - you are right in principle that the country as a whole has gone through a massive change. I think this largely started with the Kennedy assassination, but the real pivot is the 2016 election. It will take a generation to undo the damage inflicted by this Supreme Court. 2016 is the pivot point.
