Friend of mine had this to say about it: “Dewitt Thompson built the house or had it built while he was in the military. He served on a ship so maybe he was in the Merchant Marines like someone posted earlier. The person I spoke with thought he had been in the Navy but was not sure - just knew he was in the military and worked on a ship. He had the house built like a ship he worked on. He had relatives who lived there until he retired. He lived there alone with his dog for almost 18 years after he retired and moved back. By that time his relatives had built another house and moved to it. When he died - he had no wife or children so they think his brothers family or other relatives fixed it up and lived there for a while. Then a minister from Elon and his family lived there. They were well liked in the township because they baked and delivered cookies to all the neighbors every Christmas. The house was never a school or church. Eventually the minister and his family moved and they do not know who has lived there since or who lives there now. They suggested to me if I wanted to know to just knock on the door and ask. I think I would be more interested in knocking on the door and asking if I could see the inside of the house that Dewitt Thompson built in Thompson Township so many years ago to look like a ship! That is what I was told tonight by someone who grew up near the house. They also said they thought the house was at least 80 years old.”
Another friend wrote the following about the house: "
I believe the brick exterior is sort of a box around an older house. My dad, who was at UNC in the 1950s, saw this get built. Or something like that...
It seems like you can see a bit of an old roof poking out above the wall from some angles."
