TL;DR - Should we change the site name?
Around the time we unveiled the site redesign I threw out an idea of changing the URL that appeared in the address bar to show ziggazoombalounge.com instead of zzlpolitics.com. It would be a subtle change as anyone could still type in zzlpolitics.com and get to the site, they'd just see ziggazoombalounge.com in their address bar after the site loaded. Small change but meaningful in that instead of us being the ZZLP, we'd more be the ZZL. Obviously our header logo has said ZZL all along but most, if not all, have referred to this site as ZZLP. We're primarily a politics driven site of course but "rebranding" as the ZZL would perhaps be a little more welcoming to users who find this place one way or another.
Due to that thread and from a couple of suggestions prior (and after) there has been a bit of discussion regarding the legal aspect of declaring ourselves the ZZL (or staying as ZZLP or whatever we are now.) Inside Carolina is where the Zigga Zoomba Lounge/ZZLP started and thus, there may be some legal idea as to whether they/247/Scout/CBS/Paramount/Skydance Media (do I have that right?) would ever uhh.. *ahem* sue us. I am not a lawyer but apparently over half of this site is (I've heard from at least four lawyers) so you guys are welcome to discuss this below.
Another thing to consider is that when I was going to change us to ziggazoombalounge.com, someone suggested that it was probably a good idea, and decent thing to do, to shoot Ben Sherman from IC a message and ask for his thoughts on the matter. Ben was responsive and kind but ultimately suggested that we not attach ourselves to the Zigga Zoomba Lounge as that is something that's existed on IC for some 25 years now.
So, what do we do? This whole thing is your guys community. I was just kind of in the right place at the right time and really enjoyed the political discussion on the ICZZLP before the reckoning so I wanted, and knew, that we could come up with a little community of our own to continue on the camaraderie and it's been a great success. But, I just say that to say, I am essentially indifferent. In my opinion, with the caveat that I am probably one of the least intelligent people on here, we could just do nothing and stay as we are with the URL/the header logos and I would be surprised if anyone ever cared that we chugged along having our little community going. I am never going to monetize this site and we survive based on your kind donations so, again my opinion, I would be stunned if anyone ever went to the trouble to mess with us.
But, maybe you guys think we could plant our own flag and come up with a new name that embraces our past and sets a new path for our future. You'll always be able to type zzlpolitics.com or ziggazoomalounge.com and get to this site but if we renamed ourselves, the URL in the address bar would just change upon the site loading and our header logo would be different. The ever wonderful @lightbluenc has said he will modify our logos to incorporate whatever name we come up with. Why am I posting this on November 1st? Well, this site is understandably seeing it's highest traffic/user registrations around the time of the election. Some folks are either finding us via Google or more likely seeing the post in the locked ICZZLP that shows we started up zzlpolitics.com and they stumble over here and see what a joyous community we've created. I didn't want to change the name before the election but I'm fine with changing it after the election. So, if we decide to change the name, I will likely do it after the peak of election season which would be some time on 11/5-11/6. This gives us a little bit of time to discuss this and then make a move, if we decide to do so.
There you have it. What are your thoughts? What are your suggestions? I'm purposefully posting this right before I go to bed so you all can hash it out and I can wake up to a unified consensus and we will go on our merry way. Sorry for the novel.
