$60 is all that I've stumbled across, 3 twenty dollar bills laying on the ground next to my parked car. I've found a couple of wallets, but, never counted any bills and I turned them over to the police to return.

I was on my daily walk one day last summer and found a $20 bill lying in the middle of the road. When I got home I held it up and said to my wife, “Look what I found in the street during my walk.” Forgot her quick reflexes. Never saw that bill again.

I was going to some little coop grocery in Madison , may 1974 , There was rubber bound wad sitting on the sidewalk-like a drug dealer would have .There was young lady that had walked by a moment earlier and I yelled out to her if she had droped any money coming out of the store . She said "Well I am a waitress, so I might have dropped my tips'
So i gave it to her

I really don't recall.

A friend will pick up lottery tickets, if he sees one. He won a hundred dollars on one one.

I think some are confusing and people don't realize they have won.

At one time or total over the years? As a former poker player for 13 years I was at casinos A LOT and found A LOT of random 10's 20's lying around. Add those finds to the random 20 here over the years in parking lots etc...I'd estimate probably 1000 total. The most at one time was the 300 left in a ATM tray at a casino in Vegas. I put it in my pocket but never spent a penny of it the entire week I was staying at the casino knowing the eye in the sky could see who I was so I just expected the person who hit the machine to tell security and they'd find me. That never happened so I had free drinks and food on my flights home and put the rest towards my playing $.

One time I was out for a run and I saw a wad of cash on the sidewalk. I slowed down to look at it but then looked the other direction and noticed a bunch of people sitting on a front porch right across from there the cash was laying, looking my way. It looked like some type of setup; like they placed the cash there and were playing some kind of trick, waiting on an unsuspecting fool to grab the cash. So I kept going without picking it up.

Reminds me of a story
I was part of a fund raiser for a new building for the Orange county prison-a fellowship hall if you will
A great friend at Church went somewhere in the Caribbean and her husband won $3,000 gambling
They gave it all to the fund raiser

My girlfried and I took a 30 day trip around the Med on 2 back to back cruises. My ex-wife (who I'm relatively friendly with still) asked me to put $50 on 16 in roulette on the first cruise**. I almost never play roulette because it's a stupid bet with SHITTY odds but this time I figured since we got these two cruises free because of our status matches so...why the hell not. I grab 50 euro and put it down and I'll be dammed it that shit didn't hit 35:1 odds. No...I never gave her the winnings. "sorry...didn't hit this time either" 😂

**It's important to note that she never gave me any cash to do this just asked me to front her the money when I was already over in Europe.

I completely forgot. I was running on the KU campus about 10 years ago and found a wallet leading to the student dorms. Opened it up and it had $350 in cash in it. All of the IDs you’d expect, student, drivers license, etc. I used Google and Facebook to figure out who the kid was. He didn’t have a Facebook/Instagram but his mom did. His parents owned a bank in Kansas City. I messaged the mom and said hey I found your son’s wallet, here’s my number. We arranged a meetup and here’s the interesting part.

Of course, I could have pocketed the money and said I found it empty or something. But, I just “knew” that the kid was going to give me a reward for finding it. Just felt it. So I was almost being nefarious in my desire to return it because I knew they’d give me a reward. And when I got there, the kid was kind of embarrassed, reached into my car from the passenger side and grabbed the wallet, opened it and threw a hundred dollar bill at me.

I still think about it sometimes because I did a good thing but almost did it because I knew I’d get a reward from it…

Man, after reading that first paragraph of that post and before reading the rest, I thought that post was going to go in a very different direction.

When I was in high school a friend found 30k and gave it away to all of his friends. Bought friends car stereos ,drugs, booze, just gave 1k to a few people. He basically found money that someone had embezzled from someone else. True story no bullshit.

I once found a 12 pack of beer that someone left in the bottom area of a shopping cart and returned the cart to the corral.

This is an important caveat, but raises an obvious question (although the caveat pretty much answers the question): would you have given her the winnings if she’d given you a fiddy before you had left? Would she have offered to split the winnings with you, or at least given you a dealer tip? If the latter, how much?

1000 Deutschmarks
I was walking through the main train station in Zürich in 1989, There, it was on the ground - a single, fresh, crisp 1000 Deutschmark note folded up in the middle of the train station. I grabbed it, immediately stepped back up against the wall, and start looking around for some little old lady from Münich, frantically looking for her lost money. After about 5 minutes of watching all these people bustling back and forth headed for their platforms or headed out of the station I realised I was never going to find that little old lady.

I took it to the main office/lost and found. They wouldn’t take it. They wrote down the amount, and what type of note it was; took down my name and telephone # and said if no one comes and describes the banknote within 2 weeks I should just keep it. (they couldn’t just say “I lost 1000 d Marks”. They had to know it was a single note).

At the time it was equivalent to around $600 to $700 U.S.

2 weeks go by, I call the station, they said it was my lucky day. No one ever showed up claiming they lost some German money.

Here’s the thing, one week prior to finding the banknote, I had given 4 teenagers a new $50 banknote each to spend on their trip to Boston. (They were Swiss, I was living in Zürich at the time, coaching a baseball team, they were on the team and headed to a two week baseball clinic put on by the Red Sox). I didn’t have to give those kids the money, but I did it as a gesture, in good faith.

One week later I found the German Marks. I always felt it was sort of Karma - do a good deed and get repaid.

I’ve got another story of doing something not so good… and getting my just desserts… but that’s for another day.
