Honestly, given that "you wouldn't be able to criticize an autocracy if it were really autocracy" has become a common right-wing rebuttal to the alarm bells from the left,

Tell that to the students who were here legally but are being deported for simply showing up to a peaceful protest.

Or tell it to those who are denied entry because they have memes on their phone.

Right now they are going after the fringes but the rationalization of that is in full force. It is a small step towards taking away privileges from US citizens because we happen to criticize the president.

I defer to Centerpiece as to the intent of this thread, but I don't view it simply as farce or sarcasm.

To me:

farce is meant to entertain but has no intention or purpose to make a serious comment regarding the social/political condition.
sarcasm is meant to insult the expression of an idea/belief in a subtle witty way
satire uses humor with a bit of sarcasm to critique social/political conditions of the day

I think the thread is a combo...1/2 satire, 3/8 farce, and 1/8th sarcasm

Am I seriously worried about Trump and Miller coming after me for my disparaging comments about Trump on this board? Not really. That’s farcical mixed with sarcasm, and a bit o’ satire - however you want to look at it. I won’t get bogged down in the semantics.

Is there a bit of truth to the fact that the Authoritarian, autocratic regime is rolling down the road with no checks and balances - gathering steam with each and every SCOTUS decision? Of course there is.

Both can be true with this thread. A quick read through the comments tells the tale. I was just joshing, but there’s also some really serious shit going down around us, as ChapelHillSooner has aptly described.
