Why is Artificial Intelligence delusional?

I’m not impressed with what the current models can do, especially since they consistently get things wrong or just make stuff up as noted above.
In fairness, they've made computers that can understand what people say and offer back intelligent responses. It took engineers how many years to figure out how to prevent knocking in engines without leaded gasoline?

I'm no huge AI proponent but I think these models are impressive. You just have to know what to do with them. I'm using AI in my novel to help develop distinctive character voices. I'm creative at writing dialogue and I think I have some talent for it -- except that I tend toward Tarantino-style dialogue, where dialogue takes precedence over the characters. Consider the opening scenes of Pulp Fiction, talking about royale with cheese and Mia Wallace's pilot and the foot massage. Any characters could have had that conversation (not so much for the interactions with Brett, which were pure Jules). And you can get away with it in film because you have actors to portray the characters in other ways.

So what I'm doing is I'm working with ChatGPT to develop conversational styles for my characters. Then when I write some dialogue, I can send it to ChatGPT and it will translate from super-speak to super's-characters-speak. It's a bit tricky to get to work but I'm having some initial success with it.

I consider that to be really quite amazing.
