But more importantly, I think the younger workers are losing out on mentoring. I can't begin to say how much of my growth came from just dropping by other people's offices/ desks on the fly to ask questions... or even just grumble about a perceived unfairness (which often times there were good reasons for I just wasn't seeing on my own). From my perspective, there is a lot of learning not happening now on how to navigate corporate politics with people never in the office together. And not knowing this stuff is a career killer in any big company.
I was WFH for 17 months in 2020/21. This is absolutely true about the dropping by to ask questions on the fly. And have the camaraderie of being around others.

The commute makes all the difference. It was never being in the office that was the issue but all the wasted time getting there and back. Used to commute 45-60 mins every day prior to covid so WFH was a welcomed change

I now work for a company 3 miles from my house and am there in 15 mins on most days. I'm at the office 3x week and find it's a perfect balance. Definitely agree on collaborating in person > virtually. Night and day

Sounds to me like Tech professionals should Unionize.
Of course who would want to try and herd that group of introverted nerds LOL sort of

There are some tech unions but most tech companies aren't really unionized. You see it some in the government sectors and a lot of times at legacy phone companies.

There have been attempts to organize IBM for decades and to me it seems like it would be a juicy target. People keep getting laid off to make some CEO'S number with little regard and very few protections. But the union never happens.
