Self employed people work waay more than 40 hours per week.
The hardest I ever worked hands down was when I owned my own business. 70-80 hour workweeks at least...went to bed thinking about all the things I had to do and worried about all sorts of problems. It was the worst sleep I ever got.

Despite my politics, I'm a redneck, blue collar, old white guy with a high school education.
I would not say "despite your politics." You're the person the Democrats have always championed and continue to.

You've just filtered out the racism, xenophobia and maybe some of the anti-Jesus evangelicalism if it ever was there.

Being progressive, I would love for our culture to adopt the four day work week.
I suppose you would like the other benefits granted in Western European countries like no cost universal health care, 6 weeks paid vacation and 6 weeks paid maternity/paternity leave.

Do you not realize how unhappy Western Europeans are compared to Americans ?

Keep your nose to the grindstone and appreciate living in the greatest country on earth !

I thought being your own boss was supposed to be awesome.

I actually enjoy my job, probably one of the few lucky ones to have that. I work from home which is probably 90% of "enjoying" my job. It's invaluable with 3 young kids.

A quick Google shows your post to be incorrect so I’ll just leave it at that. Try for yourself if you’d like.

I was actually being groomed for the ministry until I was a little older than 12. I came from a very devout family whose widowed mom married a Southern Baptist minister. Even before that, I was the youngest person the church ever accepted for baptism (bet they'd like a do over). That all ended up being enough to vaccinate me from getting a case of any kind of religion.

Working 8 hours a day 4 days a week sounds amazing. I average about 70 hours a week between two jobs. Not complaining at all because I enjoy what I do. Would love to be home more though.
For 17 years I worked two jobs, 7 days a week, 9 months a year. Now I'm down to one job. Hazzah!

I have flex scheduling so I could work 4 10hr days or 5 8hr days. I chose a hybrid so my standard schedule is 4 9hr days and a 4hr day + I get paid 3hrs a week to workout so really I work 3 8hr days, a 9hr day, and a 4hr day. It's a damn good schedule.

before my current job I played poker and did that shit for 12 years. Everyday it was the best and worst job I've ever had. Schedule wise it was perfect bc I could work whenever I wanted and still had time to raise my two boys from the time they were 1 & 4yrs old. Made enough to go PT for a few years to figure out my next move, went back to school got my LLM, and got my current gig. I didn't plan on any of this shit especially not after graduating law school but it's worked out so I can't complain.

And make WWAAAYYYY more money usually and at least have more control over their lives (while they are still in business).
Folks I know who were self employed did spend some long hours-until they figured out they could hire others at a predictable wage to worry about half the shit they worried about ... .and they learned to spend some time spending their money

Agreed. Instead, the GQP has designs on us plebs manually turning tiny screws into iPhones 80 hours/week.
Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, has notably advocated for young professionals in India to work 70 hours a week to boost the country's productivity and economic growth.

Wait so you're saying that all those advertisements talking about a side hustle making high 6 figures and only having to work 20 hours a week are a lie?

I recall my dad working third shift full time and working days for himself to get started.

But, that is also a choice. I work where I do because, even though I have a good work ethic, I didn't want the grind that my dad had.

We’re not digging ditches or laying roof. First world problems.
There's nothing wrong with those professions. The work needs to be done and we should respect people that are willing to put in hard work like that. Though most ditches are now dug by machine and the guy certified to drive the machine is making pretty decent money.

To ever really get over the hump in a small business one has to hire people and stop trying to do everything.
