Trump hasn't helped, but FIFA and scalpers absolutely crushed ticket sales with ridiculous prices. I think they saw Americans paying $2000 for a super bowl ticket and thought surely they will pay that much to watch Saudi Arabia and Australia play real football.

This event would typically sell out but Canada is also having trouble selling tickets for games in their stadiums.

Are the tickets for most matches sold? Glancing at a couple matches on the Ticketmaster website, all the tickets listed are resale tickets.

Probably not. FIFA is releasing tickets on a rolling basis to create the illusion of scarcity. Scarcity=we can sell them for more. They are still releasing new tickets for many of the games.

But perhaps the bigger issue might be that scalpers bought a lot of the tickets early hoping to flip them for a profit. But the demand for four and sometimes five figure tickets hasn't materialized in most cases. Many are holding out still hoping folks will buy, but as the event gets closer, prices are beginning to fall as the scalpers fear they will be stuck with $1000 tickets they can't use.
