2 National Guard Members shot near White House

It's not that simple. It's more like a nature study where you have two young mostly male groups where an outgroup has been brought in with some control of the home group. They also have some pretty powerful and hostile allies.

Setting aside all ideologies, what would you make the odds of various and sundry conflicts?

According to the President, there is no crime in DC.

Now that's out of the way, let's both get real. DC is not crime riddled. DC is a big city with big city issues. The National Guard being there doesnt really help any of that and may very well be a lightning rod inviting such violence. That doesn't excuse the violence and this guy could be executed tomorrow without a trial as far as Im concerned. But the Guard being there makes things worse, not better.

And you know it.
 
A “lone gunman” carried out the attack and “ambushed” members of the National Guard, said Jeffery Carroll, executive assistant chief with D.C. police.

The person, who was also shot, was taken into custody by other National Guard members and law enforcement and transported to a hospital, Carroll said. He declined to comment on a motive.

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser called the shooting “targeted.”

Rules out it being a "true" liberal or he wouldn't have been able to hit both of them.

I doubt that a shortage of security played a role in this attack.

Farragut Square and the Farragut North Metro Station are not high crime areas. Similar to the other areas in DC that the National Guard is “patrolling.”

No reason to have Guardsmen in the heavily touristed areas of DC.
