I've lived a privileged life as a straight white Christian male. I was young during Vietnam, so the major events I've lived through would be 9/11 and COVID, with the recession from the housing bubble as a significant speed bump.

I say this to preface a thought I'm having: I don't think my trump-supporting family, friends, and acquaintances are Nazis, but what if they are ok with or if they even kinda sorta like fascism-lite? It has been so long since our country has faced a serious fascist threat. Maybe WWII is too far removed to be relevant to today's voters. Is trump's version of fascism not a deal breaker? Where does that leave us as a democratic republic?

I don't think there's any question that Trump's version of facism-lite (which I think is better compared to Orbanism in Hungary than anything) is acceptable to many Americans. Of course they would never agree that they're endorsing any sort of authoritarianism - in fact I'm quite sure they see Trump's preferred form of government as being more freedom-heavy than what came before. Which is objectively wrong, but you're likely never going to convince them otherwise. But the bottom line is that for most Americans, as long as the only people being thrown into unmarked vehicles and put in concentration camps are Hispanic and the camps themselves are out of sight, they're not going to be bothered enough to do anything about it. Nor are they going to be bothered by Trump extorting money from universities, law firms, etc, because they have a very limited understanding of what corruption really is and they see those places as more corrupt than Trump.
