I fully expect that Mamdani will win tomorrow by a good margin, and that his victory will infuriate and frighten Trump and other MAGAs and they will turn on NYC with full fury. New Yorkers should expect every level of harassment, bullying, and discrimination that Trumpers can get the federal government to muster. Including cutting federal aid for a wide variety of services to the city, ICE raids, investigations into Mamdani's finances and anything else they can get their hands on, and Lord knows what else. The only good thing is that it might take some heat off other blue cities for awhile.

Today was the last day of early voting in NYC and the line at my polling station was ridiculous. Luckily

sadly I agree with you. Not looking forward to the retaliation.

Cuomo won't do shit for NYC, he's a classic status quo centrist do-little Democrat. He'll just occupy the mayor's office, grift a little on the side, have some affairs, support some basic Democratic issues to keep his core support, and not really do anything of substance. Which is precisely why he's set to lose this election by a wide margin to a much more dynamic, personable, in-touch with what's happening in the city candidate.

ETA: And yes, telling voters in your closing speech to "Vote for Me or Trump will be coming for you!" is probably not the best message to be sending to the voters of New York.

We’ve talked about the gubernatorial races races in NJ and VA & mayor in NYC, but some other races to watch:

* VA House — can Dems hold or expand narrow margin with all 100 seats up?

* Does Spanberger have coattails down-ballot (Lt Gov and especially embattled AG candidate)?

* In New Jersey, can the GOP flip enough seats to take control of the state house? They would have a heavy lift to get there but the red shift in 2024 has them somewhat hopeful they can at least narrow the margin of not pick up 12 seats needed to take control of the lower chamber. In some ways, the general assembly race is a better test than the governors race of whether the pro-Trump shift in 2024 is sticking. [Watch the 3rd and 8th districts] — Live Results: New Jersey 2025 gubernatorial election

* PA Supreme Court — Dems are a 5-2 majority but three Dem held seats are on the ballot in a yes or no “retention” vote (required every 10 years in PA). If the court flips it could directly impact redistricting and other issues in PA. If all three are no votes, the court is stuck at a 2-2 deadlock unless Shapiro and the GOP controlled legislature can agree on new replacements (which sounds dicey from what I read).

* CA Prop 50 — Redistricting approval

* ME ballot measure — voter ID requirement

Typically in Virginia, the blue more populated areas complete counting well after the deep red but much less populated rural districts, so the early evening totals came be nerve-wracking for Dems.

55% of registered voters turned out for the 2021, which was a lot higher than their usual 40-45% turnout for the gubernatorial race in VA, but well below the 70-75% presidential year turnout they have had every year since 2004 …

This year, for the first time, turnout data indicates that GOP voters are embracing early voting, which had been dominated by Dems for a while now.

This is probably embarrassing for someone who generally likes to keep up with the current goings on in politics but I generally do not know – would someone give me the fifth grade CliffsNotes version of why Trump and MAGA are so threatened by Mamdani?
