I agree that he won't walk away that easily - he's one of the most devious and sneaky pols this state has seen in a good while. And I also have no doubt at all that Page is a MAGA redneck who will vote straight MAGA/Trumper on pretty much every issue. But at this moment I don't care, as seeing that POS Berger lose is sweet karma. In his mind I'm sure he thought he would never lose in that district which was specifically gerrymandered just for him. He spent an estimated $10 million, or $765 per vote, while Page spent only $6 per vote (about $50,000 total), and yet Page still won. If Page had even $1 million to spend on ads like Berger this race wouldn't have been close, imo. Berger has almost single-handedly held up our state budget and defunded NC public ed and done many other horrible things. Maybe we'll finally get a budget now.If this one is over, then it is because Berger decided to keep some of his powder dry for some off-year fuckery directed at Rockingham County. A snake like Berger is not just going to walk away. He will make sure his supporters in the NC Senate know he's coming back and that they need to make Sam Page and Rockingham as miserable as possible from January 2027 to January 2029. I just wish there was a viable Democrat running in November for that seat. But Gavin Newsome would have a better chance at carrying South Carolina in the 2028 election than a Democrat will have in winning the Rockingham/Guilford 2026 state Senate seat.
To be fair, Democrats breathing air and existing has MAGA Republicans very butthurt and motivated these days, so why not go ahead and pass your agenda anyway?Stupid move by the Dems.
It’s a red district that was never going to flip, I’m not worried about it. They’re securing the NOVA/Richmond/Hampton Roads vote for the foreseeable future. If Democrats didn’t do this they’d tick off the people that sent them to Richmond. The complaint about Dems is they can’t get shit done, well now they did.You can govern without going to the extreme. The test result already came through....the blue drubbings that had been occurring throughout the country turned into a red drubbing in Virginia for some reason. And now the RNC can motivate single-issue voters with the "Dems want to take your guns away" messaging which is incredibly effective.
I’m sorry. That's a hell of a gamble when the future of our country is at stake. Don't pass stupid laws that push the middle back towards the right.
I’m not worried about the MAGAs. I’m worried about the middle who leans conservative and was probably going to stay home this fall but is now energized to vote red again. To be fair, Democrats breathing air and existing has MAGA Republicans very butthurt and motivated these days, so why not go ahead and pass your agenda anyway?
If Democrats are going to play by that game they'll never pass any liberal or progressive legislation ever again, as they'll live in perpetual fear of angering the "middle". And I would argue that those people were not going to stay home anyway, as the GOP and Fox News always find ways to get them to turn out - if it wasn't gun control it will be transgender issues or illegal immigrants or some other bullshit. What matters, imo, is getting non-MAGAs excited to vote - Kamala Harris lost because six million Biden voters stayed home and didn't vote for her. If Democrats keep avoiding passing practical legislation out of constant fear of angering Republicans and the conservative "middle", what use are they, and what hope is there for the country?I’m not worried about the MAGAs. I don’t know the particulars of the legislation, but polls repeatedly show a majority of Americans favor stronger regulation of firearms. Except for a small but loud minority of single issue voters, gun control is pretty popular. It’s kinda like abortion, it’s a complete deal breaker for a rabid minority but a political winner for most Americans.I’m not worried about the MAGAs. The legislation that was passed in VA is far from “practical”…I’d argue that it is radical, and I’m a Democrat. The decision to push an extreme bill to appeal to your base and alienate everyone else could very well cost the Dems the House in the fall. Push the extreme stuff next year, not before the most pivotal midterm elections in over a century. If Democrats are going to play by that game they'll never pass any liberal or progressive legislation ever again, as they'll live in perpetual fear of angering the "middle". Most people favor “stronger regulation of firearms” because that is a non-specific, blanket term that makes people feel good. Most people would favor “stronger enforcement of traffic laws”, but would most people favor legislation that speed governs all new vehicles to 65 mph? Absolutely not. Democrats have pushed extreme gun control legislation time and time again and have lost….meanwhile, the right has used that issue to mobilize its base and bring over moderates who are afraid of losing their best means of protection. It was a selfish, short-sighted decision.I don’t know the particulars of the legislation, but polls repeatedly she a majority of Americans favor stronger regulation of firearms. What specifically about the legislation would you consider radical? I could see some not loving the piece related to magazine capacity but it doesn’t impact anything purchased/owned before July 1 of this year. The legislation that was passed in VA is far from “practical”…I’d argue that it is radical, and I’m a Democrat. be honest with yourself, man. you just don't like the bill and consider any form of gun control "extreme". it's not "selfish" to prioritize protecting your constituents over winning brownie points with an imaginary center. Most people favor “stronger regulation of firearms” because that is a non-specific, blanket term that makes people feel good. Agree completely! Worrying about (and acting on that worry) alienating voters whose votes you are never going to get only accomplishes one thing -- pissing off voters who would have otherwise voted for you.If Democrats are going to play by that game they'll never pass any liberal or progressive legislation ever again, as they'll live in perpetual fear of angering the "middle".
