About the Equal Rights Amendment

So the idea that somehow the ERA has been validly enacted is ludicrous, clearly wrong, and obviously not going to be accepted by this Supreme Court. It wasn't even accepted by RBG.

But hey, here's an idea. Let's introduce it again and run on it again. Get the GOP machine cranked up to explain to everyone why women shouldn't have equal rights. I mean, it's pretty fucking sad that it should even be controversial.

It's not going to actually pass, but it could be a potent legislative agenda item sitting around. So hopefully nobody will try to add gay rights or trans rights or anything else into it. The point of a symbolic thing is to make people take a stand on the symbol. If you add trans rights, then it gives every GOPer a way of saying, "we're all for women's equality but we're not going to put trans in the constitution."

What do you think?

Sounds like DEi to me. But if you can overcome the bias that equal rights for women diminishes men’s rights and undermines “traditional” family values and is just another Democratic strategy to focus on gender over meritocracy, then it might work.

Here's the text of the amendment if anybody's curious.

"Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

"Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

"Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification."

My view is there are not enough voters that think it's a big enough problem to really run on it. Of course there are some voters that really do think it's a problem and that could help mobilize them to vote but I think there are a fair number of folks that think passing it would lead to more problems and they might care enough to vote against it. It should probably be focus grouped and surveyed but my gut feeling is it's a loser for the Democrats.

November proved to me that this country is more mysoginist than I ever realized. If abortion didn’t move the needle I don’t think this will.
White men have largelybconvinced themselves that they are being subverted by women and at least half of white women believe the same for their sons. Thats enough folks to carry the day.

I think a lot of black men believe that, too. Black women voted for Kamala, but I think a lot of black men just decided to sit out the last election.

I read an article somewhere recently (maybe it was on this board?) that said that the percentage of college students who are women is at an all-time high, and that a study showed that one reason many young men aren't attending college anymore is precisely because of the heavy percentage of female students (now 3-to-2 or better at some schools). I know it sounds weird that some guys wouldn't like those odds - many men would love that situation - but there was a story (from a college recruiter, I believe) that when men touring a campus saw the percentage of women in classes they were very negative. It would appear they don't like the competition and still want women to stick to traditional roles.

Harris won a smaller share of women than Biden. I don't think its misogyny. Democrats need to understand that people aren't going to vote for a person just because they have a similar skin tone or the same equipment below the waist and come up with policies and candidates that resonate with a bigger chunk of the electorate.

Wait, you don't women voters can be biased against women candidates?

If someone like Trump is what resonates with the country then we are just screwed. And MAGA is all about race, sex, sexuality, and religion. It's just sad that half of the country is like that. It isn't about policies with them at all.

I'm not seeing that. I really see Democrats as the party that is more focused on race, and sex. I see Republicans more focused on religion. Sexuality, I could see an argument either way.

There are many, many women in this country who believe only men can be leaders.
My grandmother and mother viciously hated Hilary because “what kind of woman would let their husband run around with floozies like that?!”

Mind you, my grandfather and father were openly known to philander about. The dissonance. Oh the dissonance.

If we want to run on equal rights, it has to be for everyone.

We have to get people to realize that it isn't a zero sum game. That we can work on the equal rights of women as well as men.

Younger men seem to really be struggling. They are falling behind women in areas and it seems that they feel that women are being given an upper hand.

Plus, it seems that some women are simply happy to be subordinate and have a Man take care of them. Just look at how many women voted for a rapist this past election.

We have to figure out how to make everyone feel welcome in the party and that we want to level things for everyone, not just certain groups.

I think it weakens the case that Harris lost because the country has become more misogynistic.
You don’t think women can be misogynistic? There are ~60 million Catholics in the US, half of them are female. The Catholic Church is inherently misogynistic. Can a woman be Pope? Cardinal? Bishop? Priest? A historical patriarchy that excludes women from any leadership or decision-making role is pretty much the definition of misogyny. Any woman who stays in the Catholic Church accepts misogyny.

My ex-wife and her mother were up in arms in the 1992 campaign after Hillary answered a question with an answer about why should she stay home and bake cookies instead of having a career. Ultimately, they voted for Bill; but, they’ve despised Hillary ever since (because “she questioned the value of stay-at-home moms”).
