These Fox News polls remind me of Denmark. In contrast to other western European political trends, Liberals crushed the Conservatives in the last election by simply adopting the policy of strict border and immigration control. Dems should do the same here. People really prefer Dem policies and they also want RATIONAL/FAIR border/immigration control. That would not alienate Hispanics. That message should start immediately from Dems.

Conservatives would fight tooth and nail against such a thing. They badly need the "other."

I don't disagree, but remember this is what the Dems did in early 2024 before Trump killed the bipartisan bill to deprive Biden of a win before the election -- Republicans kill border bill in a sign of Trump's strength and McConnell's waning influence

I do agree Dems could be more effective at communicating their immigration message. But I'm also not sure 2026 will be much about immigration. Trump has already lost the Pubs' huge advantage on immigration by overstepping what the vast majority of Americans want. 2026 will be 95% about the economy and affordability. Which means Dems should be spending almost all their time talking about those things, and only strategically getting into (hopefully stronger) messaging on immigration.

Yes, I do remember. But Dems need a reset and make that a centerpiece of their platform to take control of the narrative. Stress strict legal control but eliminate ICE etc. I was thinking more of 2028. You are correct that 2026 should be 95% about affordability.

While something good may happen the next few months-for now ACA subsidies should be a huge message

No simple answers here. Remember, this is the PRECISE tactic that Bill Clinton used in order to win reelection (substituting "tough on crime" for "tough on immigration", thought) turns out it was wildly popular in the short term and Clinton won easily. And then the reality of offering up a portion of the Democratic constituency (in this case, young black men imprisoned for decades for minor "third strike" possession charges) arose and for a lot of people shattered the illusion that there was a real tangible difference between the Republicans and Democrats. "Everyone is against us, fuck it we won't vote, or even cast protest votes for someone like Trump".

Arguably Trump would not have won his first of even second term if not for that betrayal.

Saying Democrats should "get tough on immigration" is tantamount to saying "immigration is bad" and that's a death knell to the Democratic coalition.

In short Democrats MUST NOT showcase a "tough on immigration" plank, rather they MUST campaigning on "our immigration system has been deliberately broken by vandals who were never interested in it functioning in the first place. We need "start from scratch immigration reform".

Yeah. Focus on smart immigration policies. Talk realistically about the need for guest workers and such on both the blue and white collar levels. Stress the barriers to and the risks for immigrants voting illegally and for those who encourage it.

Most of all, separate the immigration issues from the issues concerning the drug trade.
