"but still harbors some frustration toward the members of his own party he believes pushed him out"

Nobody wants to admit that age is catching up to them and they aren't who they used to be. That begins long before 80 years old and many don't go gracefully.

The Democratic leadership had two choices: "push" him out or guarantee an election loss.

Struggling to understand how Comer and the Republicans aren't all over this story today ...

"Hunter Biden asked the U.S. ambassador to Italy for help regarding an energy project a Ukrainian gas company was pursuing while his father was vice president, according to The New York Times.

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, wrote a letter to the ambassador in 2016 seeking assistance for Burisma, which had been working on a geothermal project in Italy, the newspaper reported, citing newly released records and interviews.

At the time, Hunter Biden sat on the board of Burisma, which was having trouble getting regulatory approval for the project, a businessman involved in the project told the newspaper.

... Hunter Biden’s lawyer said his client’s outreach to the ambassador on behalf of Burisma was a “proper request” and that he had asked “various people” to help arrange an introduction between Burisma and the president of Italy’s Tuscany region.

“No meeting occurred, no project materialized, no request for anything in the U.S. was ever sought and only an introduction in Italy was requested,” attorney Abbe Lowell said.

The records suggest that embassy officials were uneasy about Hunter Biden’s request, according to the newspaper. One official wrote: “I want to be careful about promising too much.” ..."

Yeah this is pretty gross.

To me, this is more of the same as we've already seen.

Hunter was certainly trying to trade on the family name and use his dad's position to make money for himself. And it seems he was somewhat successful in doing so.

But until there is evidence that Joe was involved in any of Hunter's actions and/or that the US government actually assisted Hunter in his business dealings, I'm not terribly concerned. Because that means that Joe did the right thing and that the US government did the right things.

I'm not sure how you would ever stop the family members of US government officials from being able to try to use their family connections to advance their own careers. All that the government can do is ensure that those folks holding the positions and the government, as a whole, does not assist these family members in any real way.

One of the jobs of the US ambassador to Italy is to deal with requests exactly like this one. I took a class in law school and worked with a professor who was, among his other credentials, the US ambassador to Italy.

If Hunter Biden wanted to invest in an energy company and was having trouble getting the Italian government's approval, then the US ambassador was in fact the right person to talk to. The ambassador, of course, can 1) speak to the Italians about the issue; 2) ask the state department for guidance; or 3) tell Hunter to get lost because the state department isn't interested.

The only twist is that he was asking on behalf of a Ukrainian company. I'm not sure whether that makes a difference. I would have to ask my professor, which would be difficult as he is deceased. It wouldn't necessarily make a difference. If Hunter formed an investment company and 65% of his investors were foreign, it would still be acceptable for him to make a request on behalf of the company. I don't know how to analyze the issue given that he was a board member with a minimal investment in the firm.

Gift article that goes pretty deep

Joe Biden’s Interrupted Presidency

He sought the office nearly all his life. When he finally got there, it brought out his best — and eventually his worst.

Hunter still isn’t running and now his dad isn’t either.
I’d be fine with the GOP spending more time on this one.

GOP-led committees release Biden impeachment report without formally recommending the House move forward with impeachment

"... the 291-page report recycles previous unsupported claims to argue that Biden “knowingly participated” in a conspiracy to leverage his office while as vice president and beyond to financially benefit his family, and leaves it up to the House of Representatives to evaluate.

Republicans unveiled the report on the day the Democratic National Convention begins in Chicago, hours before Biden is expected to address the event in a keynote speech.

... It will all come down to House Speaker Mike Johnson and whether he decides to try to push through articles of impeachment during the three weeks the House returns to Washington in September while simultaneously addressing the crucial September 30 government funding deadline.

“I think it’s kind of a moot point now,” GOP Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan, who serves on the House Oversight Committee, one of the trio of committees leading the inquiry, told CNN last month.

...The Republican-led report claims to “expose a years-long pattern of influence peddling and grift centered around and facilitated by Joe Biden.” However, it is largely a retread of previous GOP theories that exaggerate Biden’s connections to his brother’s and son’s highly lucrative foreign business dealings, which the report claimed totaled “over $18 million from foreign sources.”

Perhaps the claim investigators said was most damning is the allegation that Hunter Biden, James Biden and their business partners knowingly sold “the brand” — or potential access to Joe Biden.

But one of these business partners testified that they were only offering an “illusion” of access.

... Still, the report asserts that it was known “the Biden family business model centered on Joe Biden’s influence and positions of power,” citing Archer’s testimony. But that isn’t necessarily a new revelation: Even Hunter Biden has publicly acknowledged that he would “probably not” have been tapped to serve on the highly paid board of Ukrainian energy firm Burisma if he weren’t Joe Biden’s son.

... The committee said both the FBI and IRS investigations into Hunter Biden were hampered by red tape or required additional layers of approval and oversight before parts of the investigation could proceed — a result that the committee said was due to his father’s then-position as a former vice president, and a likely future candidate for the top of the ticket. The tax investigation into Hunter Biden began in 2018, before Biden announced his 2020 candidacy. The FBI, with the assistance of the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware, opened a separate probe into his business dealings in 2019.

... While witnesses acknowledged the Bidens’ prominence in Delaware added to the sensitivity surrounding the home-state investigation into Hunter Biden, examples provided in the report seemed to reflect on the anxieties of the agents involved in the investigation rather than any influence from Biden. ..."

Hard to recommend moving forward with impeachment when you know several members of your own party will vote no, causing the motion to fail.

Especially with about 3-4 working weeks left between now and the election and actual work needed to be done to avoid an October government shut-down.

IIRC, that's guilty on 3 felony gun charges and pleading guilty on tax evasion charge.

I think the gun charge is in Delaware and the tax charge is in LA, so just the tax charges.

So what's his punishment going to be for all of this?

Sentencing is in December (sentencing in his gun conviction from Delaware is scheduled for mid to late November).

Maybe his dad just said get it over with and I'll commute/pardon you going out the door(???)

If Harris wins the election, pardoning Hunter would be the cherry on top.
