Biorhythms for Carolina @Virginia: Post-Game Discussion

One of Hubert Davis' biggest detractors among the loyal fanbase (this person's loyalty cannot be questioned) believes that he is "too nice."
^^^This may have some validity.
Again, speaking as a long-time coach, one of the key's I learned early on is to know which Jimmy you had to get up in their grill, grab them by the facemask and jerk a knot in his tail to get him to play harder/tougher/more focused... and which Joe you had to put your arm around his shoulder. whisper sweet nothings in his ear, cajole him, beg him, dangle the carrot.
Jimmy - hit him with the stick
Joe - dangle the carrot
Knowing your guys and how to encourage them in the way in which they will best respond is a very good thing to know as a coach.

Hubert, with his faith, his intolerance of cussing on the team, his "nice" demeanor may just mean he has a hard to of hitting Jimmy with the stick - when that's EXACTLY what Jimmy needs to get more out of him.

Coaches like Bobby Knight knew only one technique: the stick. And he prolly recruited only those types of kids to play for him. I'm sure he weeded out any of the players who needed the carrot. I'm thinking K was more of that ilk as well - just maybe not quite as bad as "the General".

Dean was probably a little more carrot - but I think he also had a streak in him whereby he knew how to "tactfully" use the stick. I think Roy was one who could do both and didn't mind wielding either one at any time. He just got tired of having to use the stick when even THAT didn't work on the kids he had the past couple of years at the helm.

Hubert may be the antithesis of Bobby Knight. All carrot no stick - because it's just not in his nature to use the other. I know for good and damn well Knight couldn't use no fucking carrot.

Craziest nugget in that story — Clemson has the nation’s longest road conference win streak (12 games).

I expect that to end at some point this season given their remaining road schedule but would not have guessed that. Also, Clemson’s four losses are by an average of 4 points (including one OT loss at home to NCSU), the biggest margin of loss being -6 @ Alabama.
Here's to their conference road winning streak coming to an end in Chapel Hill this season.

What a turn of events. I'm old enough to remember that game implicating a different kind of streak LOL.

When did that streak die? I don't remember which year
Cole Anthony/Bacot freshman year. Same year Tre Jones rebounded his own intentionally missed ft, hit an off balance jumper to send it to OT, and then Moore put-back at the buzzer to beat us. Bad, very bad, year.

And the year that the ACC Network did a kind of Hard Knocks with the team.

Was thinking about the road losses lately, SMU, Cal and Stanford. All of those are very long distance trips from us playing tough teams in hostile environments.

Then thinking that these players haven't really spent a huge amount of time on the road together, and none of them knew each other last year. The way it used to be, you'd have most of the team with a familiarity with each other, and some new faces. But these kinds of trips it's got to be a little bit weird with everybody really being together and living together like that, esp the Cal/Stanford trip.

I dunno...I think maybe we just underestimate a bit how tough that scenario might be on a group that is still to some degree finding their chemistry and identity. I also think that having Dallas, TX, Palo Alto and Berkeley, CA in the "Atlantic Coast Conference" is pretty ridiculous.

We were doing pretty well until that swing, and have since done pretty well. I'm hoping it was a character and chemistry-building experience for them overall.

But they have more returnees than new. 3 of the top 4 guys in MP were on the team last year, and the other guy is a top 3 pick whose dad played in the NBA for over a decade.
That is not why Duke is good.

They were a completely new team last year.

And over the two years combined, Duke is 29-1 against the ACC.

Actually your theory is as good as anyone’s in trying to figure out the collapse of our defensive efficiency since the start of ACC play prior to the end of the first half @ UVA. Hopefully the Heels now have their mojo and swagger back (spoken as a fan).

The reason Duke is good is that they have the best player in college basketball two years running now. Or at least one of the very best this year. And last year they also had a #4 draft pick who is one of the favorites to win NBA ROY. Oh, and another lottery pick.

The question was why Duke plays organized coherent defense and the answer, I think, is continuity. They are better this year on defense than last year, despite having no defender nearly as good as Flagg.

I mean, maybe Scheyer is a great defensive coach but they weren't that great on defense his first year. It's really hard to assess his coaching skills given that they routinely have more talent than anyone.

dook is good because they have far and away the best talent. That's the reason.
That is a big part of it, although the current Duke team lacks the elite talent -- outside of Boozer -- that it usually has.

UNC actually has more NBA first round talent this year.

What? This ESPN page projects three first round Dukies, and a high second round Dukie, and none of them are Cayden Boozer, who is a pro prospect but I guess expected to stay another year?

Isiah Evans is a late lottery pick, probably, after being the #8 recruit last year.

We have Caleb and HV who might or might not be a first round pick. Sort of a bubble guy. Here he is listed as a first rounder but late first round and other places have him second round.
