Biorhythms for Carolina @Virginia: Post-Game Discussion

So that I'm clear, you think HD/staff have done enough to prove to you that they are the right people to lead UNC basketball program, and as long as they continue the status quo of the past 4.5 years they should be allowed to lead it until they choose to step away?
No. It's more that I'm satisfied with the improvements coming through some disruptive times that I'd rather not give up some irretrievable connections yet instead choosing to chase some sort of success that it's not clear that we'll find. We can always do that in a couple of years .If nothing else, it'll give us time to see more about where the game is going. There's still some bugs in the current system.

The program next door currently has exemplified how you can spend a lot of money, gain a lot of fame ,win a lot of games and still do no better making the Final Four for 10 years. Do you really think they represent anything about the school? Even if it's all about winning, when it gets to the bottom line, they're not. But, enough about that.

We're well on the way to being the same way. Hell, probably college basketball is. I don't much care for it and I don't much think I can change things. I sure am willing to speak up about why I don't care for the changes

What improvements specifically? I think our weak schedule and generational talent has covered up a very similar coaching job as last year imo

I'd say 2022 was a good season. We went 17-4 over the last 21 games from late January to early April. That's more than half the season. We went 15-5 in conference. We also stacked two of the biggest wins in program history and made the national final. If we can't count that as a good season then what are we doing?
you don't get to ignore the stuff that happened that sucked. the team was not very good until mid-late January and even after that endured some poor losses

we lost double digit games, got absolutely boat raced by tennessee, kentucky, miami, wake and dook (pt 1 of 3) and earned an seed 8 seed. we weren't even a tourney lock until that admittedly beautiful, cathartic win in the rat's final game in the outhouse.

the dook victories and tournament run turned a poor season into a much more enjoyable one but the poor stuff still happened.

Amazing that this is still being questioned tbh

The positive results are downplayed or attributed to luck

The negative results are 100% Hubert

You are ignoring the good parts as much or more than I am ignoring the bad parts. We lost 10 games (nice framing with the double digit losses comment), but won 29 which is a 74% win percentage. We finished second in the ACC, one game behind national title favorite dook. You can't just get hot for a few weeks and have those kind of results. I think you are downplaying the good way more than I am the bad.

Doesn't fit the narrative that the team jelled and improved under the coaching staff. Luck fits the story line.

i never said anything about us getting hot for a few weeks. you folks JCD'ing the results that season are putting a lot of words in my mouth. says a lot about the veracity of your arguments. all i've done here is recite facts about the season. 10 games is double digit losses, dude.

other seasons where we lost double digit games would all either be considered poor or mediocre: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/north-carolina/men/

calling 2022 "good" on the whole is just incorrect. it wasn't good until the 2nd half of the season. the first half of the season was quite poor.

i haven't used the word luck once. again, it is revealing (not in a good way) that you and others are attributing arguments to me that i haven't made.

i don't think luck was involved, i credit the players and coaching staff for an amazing 2ish months of basketball.

but they still sucked for half of the season and that's on them, too.

Two things.
I'm on record that I am not qualified to address specifics.

And would y'all get together and decide if recruiting is fucking part of coaching or not?
wtf. You said you’re satisfied with improvents, I asked which ones. Our schedule has been shit, We’re 5-4 against teams in the top 80 (7-4 if you go to top 100).
This roster cost 14 million, and has very large holes in it as he couldn’t sign a point guard, largely in part to questions on Hubert’s ability to coach. So, yes, recruiting is part of coaching. In Particular, building a roster, and i’d say he’s just as good at that as he is the other parts of coaching- inconsistent and decidedly mediocre

I'm using the results from the entire season. 29-10 is a 74% win percentage, which is "good". Second place in the ACC is "good". Beating the best team in the country and your hated rival twice, once in the final home game of their vampire leader and the other in the only tournament game we've ever played them in the final four is "good". Making a run to the final game is "good". I don't know how you can't look back on that season with affection. I'm not even a keep Hubert guy. I'm still on the fence and waiting for this season to play out, but so far I'd characterize my feelings as he ain't it. I just think that season was pretty fun.

That's what I don't get. That seems like such a huge discredit to the team and the staff. Yes, they started off like crap. But they sucked it up and turned into a hell of a year. How in the hell can this be anything but a great season? Isn't about how you finish?

those were all indeed good things. very good things. and it was a really fun 2nd half of the season, i agree with you there. easily our best postseason run ever that didn't include a title.

but when you mix those good things with the bad things that also occurred.....double digit losses, getting trounced 6 times, 8 seed on the bubble until our final reg season game.....

you don't get "good" overall.

So if someone tells you before the season that we'd win 74% of our games, finish 2nd in the ACC by one game, beat dook 2 out of 3 times including in the final four and make the title game you'd be like "nah that's not going to do it"?

not when judging an entire season or an entire coaching tenure.

and then the majority of that team and that staff absolutely SUCKED the following season.

how about if someone told you that we'd win no trophies, get boatraced 6 times including dook, bow out of the ACCT early, finish with double digit losses and earn an 8 seed?

As long as the rest of the stuff I quoted happened I'd say it was a good season. Your opinion is as valid as mine, I just can't get on board with saying that was a bad season.

Edit to add - I would consider a final four and national title game a trophy as it gets a banner in the Dean Dome.

here we go with misrepresenting what i've said, again.

i never called the season bad. i questioned it being called good.

i think it was a mixed bag. i've said before that HD has had 1.5 UNC standard seasons - 2024 and the second half of 2022.

Sorry, I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. It's just when someone says something wasn't good I tend to think it was bad. Semi-good?
