Jayhawks are a mythical creature that managed to become historical and date back to the time before the Civil War. This year’s Kansas squad are also old. Melvin Council, Jr. (6-4, Sr) is 23 and at his fourth school while Nginyu Ngala (5-10, Gr) of Canada is likely 26 years old and has already played 4 years of college ball above the border. Elmarko Jackson (6-3, So), aka “The Sharpie” is 21 and somehow still a sophomore. Tre White is 22 (6-7, Sr.), at his third school – he starts at BIG guard. That said, Kansas starts two freshmen, also guards and both 6-6 in Kohl Rosario and projected superstar Darryn Peterson (this kid’s only 17!). Self has gone his own way in putting this squad together, seeking pieces rather than accolades so they say. In the pivot is Congolese center Flory Bidunga – he’s a 6-10 bruising space-eater. Joining White, Rosario, Peterson, and Bidunga in the starting five is the rangy journeyman Melvin Council, Jr (6-6). This strikes me as a wiley team of mix-and-match character. Bryson Tiller is a 5-star, 6-11 Center Freshman that will come off the bench. Overall, it is hard to say what to expect except that this team ought to be well-drilled and versatile. Peterson and Bidunga are the designated Stars. Neither has bad biorhythms for this game – Peterson is brainy and Bidunga is brawny.
Frontcourt: Veesaar is soaring and Brown and High join him, all with strong ritmos.
Wings: Caleb Wilson has low arcs for tonight – always a test for greatness is overcoming such sun-cycled challenges. Jarin Stevenson is clever but none too physical. Bogavac appears to be stable and none too high nor too low. Jonathan Powell has the best marks for a wing and could surprise.
Guards: Seth Trimble is fire across the board. Kyan Evans is below the fold unfortunately. Derek Dixon and Jaydon Young both have excellent “want-to.”
Overall: This is undeniably a Blue Blood Battle and one in which the schools are quite deeply entwined dating back to the 1957 triple-overtime UNC win over KU (and Wilt Chamberlain) for the National Title. KU is Coach Smith’s alma mater and Coach Williams went there to play his trade before returning to his homeland to lead the Tar Heels. James Naismith invented the game we love, and coached at Kansas where Dean Smith learned it, and it was at Carolina where Coach Smith perfected it and made it our own. All that and yet this is the first time that a KU men’s hoops team has visited the campus of the University of North Carolina. The significance and profound historicity of this game in the Grand Scheme is chart-topping.
Prognosticators are all over the place in this one…Six give the Tar Heels the edge while a Half Dozen give the advantage to the Jayhawks. Carolina has lost as recently as last season to KU and again just two years prior in the NCAA Championship game. Kansas leads the tally between the schools, 7-6. The biorhythms point to big games from Trimble and Veesaar, a challenging night for both Kyan Evans and Caleb Wilson, and steady performances from Bogavac and Stevenson. Powell (6-6 wing, in from W.Virginia) looks to contribute as do the back-up bigs (Brown and High). Kansas players are neither too high nor too low in their circadian patterns though there is a goodly amount of excitement among them. Strung too tight? The spaces closest to the rim promise to be highly patrolled and fought over. This team is every bit as tall as Carolina and the match-ups will be intense. Kansas has a weight advantage–Carolina has the home court. Despite the tightness of the predictions from the professionals the Biorhythms see Carolina winning and beating the 2 point leeway given by most. Tar Heels by 8.
See y'all there...
