Ryan’s Big Basketball Battle
The Left Coast Calls and the Tar Heels answer tonight in a 9:00 pm tip in Palo Alto. The Maples Pavilion has made for a solid home advantage of late. The Cardinal went 9-1 at home in last year’s inaugural season in the ATLANTIC Coast Conference and this far have lost to Notre Dame and upset a strong Louisville team making the cross-country journey. Of course it is wrong that this team (as well as Cal and SMU) should be in a conference so-named but such are the times in the chaotic and irrational world of college basketball. Suffice it to say that combined with time zone changes and cultural differences, home games for the California schools create an artificial edge stacked against the visitor. The game IS at 9 pm OUR time though so night-owl college age kids ought to cope better than 8 to 5er fans. BTW we’re playing a school with a tree mascot that has nicknamed its campus “The Farm.” (Does state college do well there by chance?) All this goes back to Leland Stanford, their dookish Robber Baron founder-benefactor, who cut down many, many trees to build a horse farm that later became the site for his eponymous university, itself in many ways the dook of the west. The tree mascot most technically identifies with the town’s name of Palo Alto (literally tall stick but actually Big Tree), taken from a giant redwood there that Mr. Stanford did not fell.
Stanford is 13-4 and 2-2 in the league with a notable win over a slumping Louisville team (in the battle of the word Cardinal – Stanford claims the color, U of L, the bird) and in conference play add in win over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on a last second shot by Freshman Phenom Ebuka Okorie. Out of New Hampshire(?) this 6-2 point guard is second in ACC scoring with 22.1 per game. A respectable shooter from distance, Okorie goes to the rim and makes acrobatic shots while drawing fouls. He is the Cardinal offense and with the ball in his hands there is always a danger of Stanford scoring. Chisom Okpara (13.9 ppg) is the secondary threat at 6-8 and 240 he is a load but actually more of an outside-inside player rather than a “right of weight” guy like so many pushers and shovers in the game. He’s the second-leading assist man on the team (after Okorie) on a team that goes for 12 scoring passes per game (Carolina = 17 assists per game). Stanford will work to keep the pace steady rather than fast and may even employ a run the clock strategy against UNC tonight. Patience Tar Heels, Patience. Benny Gealer is the heart of this team – a four-year, same school, old school player from Southern California, Gealer was a preferred walk-on who now starts as a senior and averages 10.5 ppg – he’s a mobile player who stays in the thick of the action – a worry wart some might call him. Ryan Agarwal is 6-6 and has had some big moments, hit some treys, and can’t be overlooked. The Bigs for Stanford are Belgian first-year man Oskar Giltay (6-10) and Massachusettsan Aidan Cammann (6-10). Together with 6-9 A.J. Rohosy they can garner a combined 17 ppg and 15 rpg – well, if we add up their averages that is. Who has good ritmos for tonight? Chisom Okpara looks strong as does 5th year portal man, Jeremy Dent-Smith, a guard. Pivot Aidan Cammann might surprise. Okorie has a solid physical as well and the good players tend to make the most of what they’ve got going.
Frontcourt: Henry Veesaar is soaring, while Caleb Wilson’s got all the want-to possible. Jarin Stevenson is fired up and smart.
Wings: it could be that Bogavac shines out west, his arcs are good all around. Powell joins Luke in good arcs across the board tonight though mostly he’s clever. Jaydon Young, who excelled last time out with bottomed out biorhythms, is still in that trough.
Guards: Seth Trimble looks very good in all categories save emotion while Kyan Evans is all below the fold except in determination. Derek Dixon is physical.
Overall: Heels have the inside game IF THEY WILL USE IT. ← That’s Offense in a nutshell. Less distance, more close-in work. Veesaar should feast and Wilson wants to be back on track so the effort should be there. A sagacity-filled Stevenson ought to win some battles in the offense. The struggle to control the pace will be a feature of this game. Stanford is careful with the ball and can pressure on defense (Force 14 turnovers – 8 are steals). Trimble’s runs to the rim will be key, i.e., they need to happen.Bogavac playing calmly and Powell being smart would and should be important elements of the offense. Young and Dixon off the bench are wild cards.
Carolina is pegged as a 2.5 point favorite. The rhythms see adjustments demanded by the relocation and the a hostile Farm Atmosphere handing over some advantages to The Cardinal but the Tar Heels overcoming that to the tune of a hard-fought 6 point win.
