Biorhythms for UNC @Stanford: 9 pm Tip on ACCN

Is this our weakest backcourt since 2002? The 2020 backcourt while Cole Anthony was out with his injury was really bad, but I’d sure love for this team to have a Brandon Robinson.
05-06 was very weak. Brandon Robinson, Bobby Frasor, Wes Miller

Brandon Robinson wasn’t there then.

No real stars in the 2005-06 backcourt, but they played well and were much more productive than our current backcourt. And Miller shot 44% from 3 that year.

I wonder if we had offered Elliot the same money we are paying Evans if he would have stayed. I know things had turned sour by the end, but I doubt he is making more than Evans at Michigan and this team would be much better on offense (though still struggling with shooting and defense) if Elliot had stayed.
The rumor when EC entered the portal was that he'd asked for $2mil and was rebuffed, although his mom refuted the rumor. Evans' estimated NIL for this year is more than $2mil. I can't find what Cadeau got from Michigan.

I think if he'd have been made a priority he might have stayed for roughly what Evans is getting, but that's hard to know for sure. I think him not feeling like a priority was likely part of what led him to want to leave, but I also think we didn't quite understand how the market was going to have jumped when we were negotiating with him.

I meant Quentin Thomas. Don't know how I confused those two.

We seem to be having this issue with both of our revenue sports.
In HD and Tanner's defense, I remember a lot of folks - coaches, GMs, agents, everyone - being surprised at the amount of money that was being thrown around last off-season and no one seemed quite prepared for it. Especially for the offers that trickled down to second- and third-tier options after the top tier players were off the board.

Hindsight is beneficial. If we knew then what we know now, and all that ...

But getting comparable players through the portal has always been more expensive than retention. It is cheaper to retain than to acquire. My best guess is that Elliot's departure had more to do with soured relationships than dollars and cents -- on both sides.

I agree with you about hindsight.

I also agree that Cadeau's departure was more about a disconnect between him and HD than pure dollars, but I also think that the dollars we offered were likely lower because the staff didn't value him as much as he wanted to be. The two issues are almost certainly intertwined.

I do hope if we decide to move on from Coach Davis after the season that we can convince him to step down versus having to fire him - and I really hope that we look outside the Carolina family for his replacement - I know Billy Donovan's name has been mentioned before but I saw he recently signed an extension with the bulls so don't know how likely that will be

That was a horrible loss. The last three games have been awful. I have my doubts about how the rest of this season is going to play out. Not looking good, folks.

A number of the portal PGs we targeted don't seem to be playing well.

The best PG we likely had a shot at was already in Chapel Hill, but...yeah.
I was thinking about Cadeau as well but there wasn't a guard on the court last night that he could have guarded and his less than 2 threes a game and free throw shooting wouldn't have likely made much difference ,either.

Face it, they had three players absolutely go berserk from the three and it still took us missing 12 free throws for them to win. Sometimes you just get outplayed and nights when the other team goes 15-23 from three is likely to be one of them.

that would be preferable, but it's critical that Davis is gone. That's all that really matters at this point.

But that's 3 straight games where the other team has hit 3s like that. It's not them just getting hot. The perimeter defense is not good and Hubert is not good at making adjustments.

Agree on all points you have here... but will add the real blame goes to the players on the floor. Heck, they're pros now - getting paid big bucks to play a kid's game. And staying in front of your man or keeping up your intensity on D, or communicating with each other on D is fundamental. You see it in every gym watching men's industrial league recreation center games. The players either will D up and play with intensity 100% of the time - or they will not. Recall: Roy had the same problem with his bunch of players his last 3 or 4 years. He got tired of having to coach or "teach" the literal "want to" and toughness on defense. He got tired of it.

Usually the rag on Hubert is the offense. But that's not been the problem at all so far this season. 90 pts on 58% shooting and out-rebounding the other team should be plenty to win a game. Missing 12 FT's didn't help.

Seems like playing tough D left Chapel Hill a long time ago... before Hubert became head coach.

As has been pointed out, the group that would hire Hubert's replacement is the same group that brought you Bellycheck.
