Biorhythms for UNC @Stanford: 9 pm Tip on ACCN

How is it Hubert's problem when they have outrecruited us tremendously for the last 12 years?

Just as an aside, can you show your math on how Duke is outrecruiting us, outplaying us, (apparently) outcoaching us and yet we're a better program? Without me arguing a single point, explain this in some way that I ever bother with your opinion again.
We’re a better program, not better team. We have been to the national title games three times since their last appearance. We have more natties, more final fours, more wins, and own the head to head.

I don't think I've ever said that. I have repeatedly said that I believe it was best if he were able to turn the program around. I also think that the program's problems are not nearly as centered on his coaching as you do. I think circumstances like Covid, NIL and being a public university in ill favor with it's overseers are also a factor. I think there's a good chance that I'm the most pessimistic poster on the board that Hubert will make it. That's not even counting the rise in overt racism in current society. At least there should be less shuffling of the feet, side glances and denials about that still mattering.
Can you please explain your point about it not being as centered on his coaching as I think it is. For example, what are you seeing that they're doing well? Where have they shown that they can identify and learn from past mistakes? How is he helping to get recruits (both HS and portal) to buy-in to the system and come here (without having to overpay them)?

I understand that what I'm asking is a time-consuming process, so please feel free to ignore my request.

The weird thing is that through the FSU game, we were (statistically-speaking) playing good defense.

Using KenPom's numbers, we our Defensive Rating before the SMU game was 96.4, good for 18th in the country.

3 games later, our (season-long) Defensive Rating is 101.4, which is 51st in the country.

It's like the entire team got neuralyzed by the MIB between FSU & SMU and totally forgot how to play defense.
I think Greg nailed it in the after-game pod. Teams were getting good looks against us, just missing them. Why they were missing them? Who knows, but I'd bet a little that it was the fact that the teams we were playing were not used to playing against "North Carolina," so nerves and all that. Now, those teams are hitting their open shots.

Assuming this team doesn’t fall completely off a cliff, which is a bit of an assumption at this point

That was the type of loss that knocks you back a full seedline. ACC and NCAAT. 0-2 on the road in ACC play with 5 more road games that are more difficult than Stanford still to come

Unlike last season or 2023 I’m not convinced this team will never beat a good team at any point. But the floor of this team being as low as it is despite a NBA front court is crazy

An NBA front court.
Just how bad can our guards be? An NBA front court and we may not have anything to show for it after the season.
Seems weird. Last year we had no front court to speak of.
This year, it’s the exact opposite.

This team needs to play fast to be effective, but does not have the bench to do it. Both halves were the same, with the second being worse. Played great the first 10 minutes, ok the next 5, and tried to hang on in the last 5. But honestly, even if we set all that aside. Eliminate sloppy/ unforced turnovers and hit free throws, and we walk away with a 10 point win last night... granted, tired legs probably play a role in both of those.

Seth's injury plays a huge role in this. This team had zero on court experience together prior to the season. We desperately needed time in December for them to gel together. Having the team do that gelling without Seth, and now trying to figure things out with hi is a terrible way to start conference play. Granted, Luka's slow adaptation to NCAA play (and lower athleticism level than expected) is also playing a big role.

As I think about the game more this afternoon, I keep coming back to one constant truth…

The Tree got to them.

The thing that stood out to me the most in that game was just how good Okorie is. We just couldn't stop him...and he's such a great passer that he opened up a lot of things for his team-mates, and got them really good looks. Kid played out of his mind.

What gets me is that it seemed like the defense would actually be the calling card for this team. I guess we can quibble about scheme, switching, etc. but the team also just looks like they’re going through the motions and losing focus effort-wise for big chunks of every game for whatever reason.

First five minutes of the second half we actually locked him down pretty well.

These guys have issues maintaining intensity. And if we’re not switching some of them (looking at you Kyan and Jarin) made poor efforts fighting through screens late in the game.

I'd bet it has to do with what's emphasized in practice. If you don't emphasize fighting through screens (and why would you, if you strongly believe in switching primarily) then you're probably not going to fight through screens in the game. I don't think the players, in the game, are like "fuck it, I'm not going to do what HD has been emphasizing in practice." The piss-poor defense starts at the top, along with most of everything else.

Not to blow you off but it's a fact that I don't know enough about the program in specific or the game in general than to do more than form a personal opinion. Since I don't generally spout off about things I can't back up, I'm not too prone to go there. It would even be hard ( and damned tedious for both of us) to verbalize everything behind why I'd like him to succeed.

The problem with switching is they aren’t even switching half the time. They are just standing around guarding air

A mismatch is one thing. Ok it happens. A failure to guard anyone at all is a whole other story

Seth’s defense has taken a step back. He used to do a better job at staying in front of guards who were quicker

Historically we are a better program. Right now they are a better program. Pretty simple.

If you combined UNC's frontcourt with Stanford's backcourt you'd probably have a pretty dang good team
