59 points in the second half
Crazy but again this team is built to get buckets (even if we don’t get stops or rebounds).

Dayton didn’t really falter, but their shooting averages came back down to earth just enough in the second half and UNC got over the turnover plague for the last 15 minutes or so. They finished with 15 turnovers and I bet at least 13 of them happened before the under 12 minute timeout in the second half.

Dayton fouled a lot during the game and it caught up with them over the course of the second half. Our guards got a bunch of offensive fouls trying to counter the physical play, but limited those in the second half.

But damn, Dayton hit clutch shot after clutch shot. That is what makes this comeback particularly unusual. They answers again and again. But UNC’s ability to get fast breaks created enough possessions and put enough pressure on the Flyers to win.

TBH, Dayton probably should have taken some air out of the ball on offense but they got the lead playing pedal to the metal, hyper-aggressively and they stuck with it even as UNC revved up the game pace to smoking overdrive.

Dayton was 14-32 for three, 12-15 from the charity stripe.

RJ 30 pts - 5 assists - 7 boards
Seth 27 pts - 10 boards

Cadeau 10, Jalen 9, Drake 6 clutch points

UNC 27-32 FT, 9-23 three (7-14 in the second half(?))

GO HEELS!!
Those foul shots are FREE and KEY!

Actually it was 14 turnovers at the 12 minute mark. We didn’t have another turnover until RJ with 27 seconds left. I’m not sure I’ve seen a non-Duke game when we had so many offensive fouls called. If the refs didn’t decide to take over the game, we’d probably only have single digit TOs.

This was the perfect way to consume a late night Carolina basketball game. I was asleep by 10 PM Eastern, woke up after getting a solid 8 1/2 hours, and saw that we were down 18 points at halftime but rallied to win. I got plenty of sleep, didn’t have to get angry at being down 18 to Dayton at midnight, and the Tar Heels advance in the winners bracket in Maui.

Up early, but not early enough to watch the game at 2am. I’ll watch the replay later today.

But a quick look at the stats tells a little bit of the story.

Once again we shoot over 50%
Get to the line a lot and hit close to 80% (79%)
But that’s where the similarities to the last game end.
This game, we out-rebound our opponent 36-29 (that’s an improvement from last game)
However, we only had 11 assists vs. 15 turnovers (that’s a huge turnaround from last game, in a very negative way) From reading the game thread I take it a lot of those were offensive fouls called against us.
That said, the Flyers were called for 27 fouls (we had 20), leading to our 34 attempts at the stripe - hitting 27. Which on paper, looks like that’s where we stayed in the game and perhaps won it… at the FT line.

Obviously Trimble and Davis had monster games…

Looking at the +/- per player… it appears that Lubin (8 minutes) should have played more then Withers (20 minutes). Lubin was +6 when he was out there, Withers, conversely, was -8. I guess Coach thought JWit was a better fit, but the +/- numbers say otherwise. (Or am I reading the numbers wrong?)

Elliot had a subpar game that’s for sure. He was -8 on the plus/minus - what was his problem?

I think I will fast forward and miss the 1st half… seems as if the 2nd half of the game is the only thing worth watching.

Going to be fun watching the game knowing the Heels made an epic comeback to win a high scoring game.

But how concerned should we be that it was against Dayton?
Not terribly, I don’t think. They were an NCAA tournament team last year. My biggest takeaway is that now for the second time in this early season, we have come back from 18-20 point leads to take the lead and put ourselves in a position to win the game. Even with the flaws that we have on the interior and on the back boards, to me that is a really big deal that this team doesn’t quit, believes in themselves, and goes out and makes it happen even when they dig themselves a big hole.

That was a great college basketball game. Dayton is a good gritty team.

Lets see what we have vs a very good gritty team tonight.

Not getting my hopes up cause an inside presence is not walking thru the door for us.

I live in Birmingham for another 8 months until we move back to North Carolina. The Heels are currently 0-2 against Alabama in basketball while I’ve been living down here and it infuriates me. Here’s to this UNC team winning the Alabama state championship over these next two weeks by knocking off ranked Auburn and Alabama squads!

Withers seems to hurt the Heels more often than help them, but most if the time he is just a nonfactor. I'd say 10% of the time he helps them, 20% of the time he hurts them, and 70% of the time he isn't a factor at all.

I’m still sore about that last three-pointer he took in the Alabama game last year in the Sweet 16.

What has impressed me about this year's team so far is their competitiveness. These guys just don't quit, even in terrible situations. They played #1 Kansas at Kansas - a hostile place to play - and gave KU all they could handle. They get down by 21 to a team that was on fire and kept hitting daggers but they refused to fold and just kept plugging until they got the lead and kept it. Yes, they're short in the frontcourt and they have some flaws, but as long as they keep this competitiveness they'll be a formidable foe for any team they face this season, imo.

Totally agree with every word. This is going to be a really fun team to watch all season long. These guys have some dawg in them. That was the biggest concern that I had with losing Ingram and Ryan off of the team last year- I felt like those guys brought the junkyard mentality to our basketball program. This team so far has had no trouble summoning it!

I'm sure glad Trimble changed his mind about entering the portal. He gives us a lot of that toughness.

For all of you who stayed up to watch that game -

Baby Hat GIF
I didn't stay up to watch... but if I had, I would have cashed in at halftime and gone to bed.
How many on here did just that?
Stayed up to watch the game - saw it wasn't going well at half and gave up?
