Yeah. The buyout is a bright red flashing warning sign, IMO. It’s really difficult to understand why 1. UNC would agree to it as it gives the school zero leverage whatsoever, and 2. why Bill would have demanded it be structured that way if he doesn’t have designs on other jobs. Granted, I suppose one could argue that no buyout of any size would be an impediment to any NFL team that truly wanted him, but why make it even easier than it would otherwise be?
I’m obviously hoping and cheering for it to all work out well for us, but I’ve got doubts. Certainly I’ll enjoy the ride as it comes and for however long it lasts, but I’ve also tempered my expectations. Yes, he’s likely the greatest NFL coaching mind of all time, but to me, Occam’s Razor indicates that at 72 years old he’s probably lost a bit off his fastball, and he’s probably not going to enjoy navigating all of the politics, gladhandling, etc that comes with coaching at a university and coaching 18-22 year old kids who are amateurs in some respects when it conveniences the NCAA and professionals in other respects. We shall see.
