In wildland fire, sure. They write off entire neighborhoods. However, the LAFD is first and foremost a structural fire department as well as a very large EMS department. They don't fight wildfires every day, but they do fight multiple structure fires every single day. The comment that the person in question made was not in reference to wildland firefighting, it was in reference to firefighting in general. It would be akin to a trauma surgeon saying, "Who cares if I'm drunk when I'm operating on your husband? He shouldn't have put himself in a position to be shot in the first place." Simply a mindless and horrificly stupid thing to say.
You know, these fires are disasters. The people who are having to put their lives on the line to try and stop the fires as well as protect people, should be commended not politicized.

But, a bunch of fucking idiots in this country elected a man that acts like a fucking 10 year old. He calls the governor a childish name. Instead of being supportive and working to help the situation. He then basically says every non-white male hire in the fucking world is a DEI hire and keeps this bullshit stirred up when we shouldn't be fucking talking about the leaders of the LAFD, we and every fucking leader in this country should be doing and saying everything possible to help the situation. Not, as the maga fucking cult always does, finding a thread to keep dividing the fucking country.

This fucking piece of shit that the fucking idiot cult elected, is so stuck on his lies and divisiveness that he can't see the importance of being a leader in this situation. Just like he wasn't a leader during COVID. SO, he keeps up his bullshit lies in order to keep the cult feed. Just like in the New Orleans situation where he claimed that the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant when he didn't know a fucking thing about the situation. You know the guy who was an American citizen...

I hope that Musk shares his tax cuts with the cult because they are so brought in that they want to argue about the stupidest things when we should all be supporting those in California putting their lives on the line to stop the fires and protect people.

FUCK THE CULT MENTATILITY that is working to make fucking forest fires political witch hunts.

And fuck everyone that thinks every fucking hire in this country that isn't a white male is a DEI hire. Fuck the MAGA cult.

It was in relation to Fox News saying she was a DEI hire and that is why LA burned. It had nothing to do with carrying people out of buildings on a regular structure fire.
The Fire Chief may or may not be a DEI hire. It sounds like she has a very good record and is well-qualified for her position. Even if she wasn't, she's not the reason that LA burned. LA burned because climate change combined with decades of short-sighted building construction in very vulnerable areas made this inevitable. And it will continue to happen again, and again, and again. People will not be able to rebuild because no one is going to insure properties in those areas anymore. Same thing with homes and buildings in hurricane-prone areas in our part of the country.

That said, when people like the LAFD Deputy Chief in question say things that are as horrifically stupid as what she said (on camera, in an interview no less), then there is a very valid complaint that can and should be raised at some of these practices. I'm all for increasing diversity and equity to better include underrepresented populations in professions that they are not well represented in. But the message being conveyed to the public should be "we're ensuring that everyone hired is fully capable of doing the job." It cannot be, "yeah, you are right that we are hiring people that we know can't perform adequately but that's a problem for the victims to worry about", which is what this person said.

100% with you. Stay off of the comment sections on social media. It is infuriating. Whenever anything goes wrong anywhere in the US, there are morons blaming DEI for it. Take the recent airline incidents, for example. Plane crashes? Must have been a DEI pilot. Nevermind the fact that flying now is statistically the safest it ever has been and is orders of magnitude safer than it was when only white men were flying the planes.

No, they will definitely rebuild. It will likely be another 40-50 years before LA realizes that hill neighborhoods are a bad idea.

Not necessarily on this thread, but in general.

I'm man enough to admit that I can't follow every poster with a magnifying glass. I will keep my eye out for you. If you do as you say you do, then I will owe you an apology and we can keep going from there.
Fair enough, super. And if you will accept it, I'd like to extend my apologies for being an ass to you over the past couple of weeks. We disagree on a lot, but there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it and I've been choosing the latter more often than not.

I was listening to an interesting podcast about insurance and the complexities. They went into this subject a little. I believe that most people, including me, don't really put together all of the factors. Like global warming, urban sprawl, and other conditions that all play a role in why these fires have greater and greater potential risk.

Let’s not act as if all non “DEI” hires are competent or qualified.

In fact, I’d wager the % is roughly the same.

And, it’s incredibly lame to label every non-white, non-male, non-straight person hired a “DEI” hire (which I don’t believe you are doing).

While a lot of the rage against DEI is bullshit, the LAFD Assistant Chief made a head-scratching comment when pressed if the best people were being hired for the job:

“Am I able to carry your husband out of a fire? He got himself in the wrong place if I have to carry him out of a fire.”

Big oof.

It's very simple - if you can't meet the physical requirements/demands of a job, you shouldn't have the job.

Requirements shouldn't be lowered to allow females into a job.

Which came first, the bus ride or the hotel stay?

My understanding is they were not being housed in hotels until the bus loads arrived.

I believe the hotels are reactionary, not normal policy.
The bus ride had to have come first, but NY welcomed migrants, so I thought they'd be happy to receive some. 😁

Lying is becoming a sport for some in this country. Disgusting. 🤮
It's also lucrative for some on the far-right. Not just Fox "news" channel. Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, Tim Pool, Charlie Kirk and Crowder (can't recall his first name) to name a few.

They just can’t stop the rain causing the flooding.
They just can’t stop the wind knocking over the trees and power lines causing power outages.
They just can’t stop my blathering idiotic mouth from moving.

“They just can’t put out the fires.”

Probably because they didn’t rake them, Don. This never would’ve happened with you as President, mein Fuhrer.
Just don't tell him about the Camp Fire that killed close to 100 people in California under his watch. The deadliest wildfire in California history happened squarely under his watch.
