Car accident

I had a collision one time, the other driver was at fault, called the police and I still got screwed.

I was approaching a light at a major intersection and needed to turn left. I got into the left turn lane. It is a four lane road, two lanes in each direction the road I was on. Not too far from the traffic light intersection. There is a CVS on the left.

Well, some dumbass tried to cross all four lanes from CVS to the shopping center on opposite side. He crossed right in front of me. I thought he would go half way and yield to me. He did not. Drove right in front of me and smash.

I called the cops. He arrived, and we both shared same story. Copper told him he had to yield to oncoming traffic. The other guy says, no he was in the turn lane and had to turn into CVS. The cop corrected him and said, no, he COULD have turned in, but that is also the turn lane for the light ahead. He even wrote the guy a citation. He told him he must always yield to oncoming traffic when coming out of a parking lot.

The other guy was adamant he was correct and kept fighting it. My insurance company caved and they agreed to list us both at fault. I called them and asked, what the hell, the guy got a ticket from the cop who rides that beat, which they will rarely get involved unless obvious.

I have to admit that I cringe when people say they don't call the police and don't file a report but I'm paranoid about other people. My daughter didn't call the police on a minor fender bender a couple years ago but she had a screaming child in the car so I can't blame her for that. My husband was in a car accident last week. Early morning and the other driver was passing a car illegally and clipped my husband's car. Split seconds from being straight on collision. The other driver apparently drove through a couple of yards and turned over into a cemetery (she is fine). Does it make me a bad person that I laughed at that? Just found out our car was totaled so now we have to go car shopping again.

I recently had a pretty good experience, all things considered.

A young coworker hit my car in the parking lot at work about 2.5 months ago, and he was EXTREMLY remorseful - good kid. I told him it wasn't my first rodeo and it wouldn't be his last. He called the cops and the poor kid got a ticket. I assumed my car would be totaled, but as it turns out, his insurance company valued my car about 70% more than I paid for it (used) 5 years ago. The repair included replacing one headlight only, so now I have one brand new headlight and one old, weathered one. I called and explained to the insurance adjuster that my car looks worse now than it did before and they agreed to replace the other headlight. I thought that was pretty cool; good on them.
