Car Brands

Seems like once upon a time car/truck brands were like teams. A man and his family were either Ford or Chevrolet. My Deddy was a Ford subset guy, only ever driving a Mercury sedan and a Ford truck. His brother though was strictly a Chevrolet guy. I remember lots of banter about such things once upon a time.
Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth too. My great-grandfather and grandfather were all Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth or Hudson buyers for years and years - when I was a kid they still had an old Hudson Hornet that was fixed up and they still drove it occasionally. I remember as a kid going to the local Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth dealer in town with my dad and grandfather numerous times to look at cars and talk to the dealers and mechanics. I think stock car racing had something to do with it - Richard Petty drove Plymouths and Dodges for most of his career, and my dad loved Richard Petty. But he also bought other brands besides Chrysler products, and the whole brand loyalty thing gradually seemed to break down. I wouldn't buy any Chrysler product car or van today, as generally their quality sucks, except maybe for pickup trucks, which I don't drive.

I have the Mazda cx5 and I very much like it. The acceleration is just okay and the mpg (31hwy) could be better, but it’s extremely comfortable and the materials are top-notch.

I assume the cx-90 would be similar.

I am a buy and hold guy with cars, so I steer toward Yoda and Honda. I love my '04 Tundra. No payments, little to no repairs, and no one bothers trying to steal it.

I'm similar, mostly Toyotas and Hondas over the years. Some purchased new, others 10-15+ year old used clean examples

Have a '05 Accord, '05 RSX, and '05 LS430 at the moment. 200k/140k/95k miles respectively. Next vehicle will be a mid '00s 100 series Landcruiser/LX, assuming I can find one that isn't rusted out

Early-mid '00s was the golden era of car making imo, at least when it comes to Honda/Toyota. Best balance of reliability, cost, quality, and tech

My brother-in-law is an engineer and loves VWs - German engineering and all that. Loves the way they drive. One thing I've noticed though, is that nearly all of the VWs he's owned over the years have mechanical issues - nothing serious but just a lot of "tics" and flaws that require a lot of maintenence. He enjoys fixing some of the problems himself, but that's not for me.

This is accurate and can apply to German cars in general. More maintenance, potentially complex issues, and better driving characteristics

I've owned several BMWs over the years and like a lot of what MBZ does, but the repair costs are downright scary and ultimately keep me away

I’ve owned a BMW 328i and a Volkswagen Jetta TDI diesel (before they were recalled for the emissions snafu).

Someone hit me and totaled the Beemer a couple of months ago. Loved driving it, but got tired of having to put premium gas in it while getting pretty low mileage and having limited maintenance options.

Wish I still had the Jetta, though I’d probably be singing a different tune if I had to fill it up with diesel these past few years. It got great mileage though.

Been without a car since my wreck. I work from home so don’t really need one. Looking for a truck to have some storage space for camping, moving, etc. Probably a Toyota Tacoma.

Not sure what the word is on the new Tacomas yet. A turbo i4 would give me pause for a truck with legendary reliability

I wouldn't hesitate to pay a premium for a used 3rd gen still. Small/outdated interior and all, they are proven

Oh yeah, I will defo be getting used. Probably no newer than 2017 or so.

Hilarious how true this is, especially when it comes to trucks/SVUs. My parents and extended family all have Chevy trucks or suburbans just because a distant relative owned a Chevy dealership at one point and the tribalism still sticks lol.

My wife is in the market for an SUV soon and I think she’s down to either Honda Pilot or Kia Telluride. Marking this thread to see the replies.
Lots of good options. Bought my wife a 24 Palisade. Hands down the best vehicle we have ever had. Originally intended to get the Telluride but wound up with the Palisade because of the head's up display and they had the color she wanted. MPH better than anticipated and turning radius is fantastic. Of course I'm comparing it to my 4 WD truck. Can't beat the Kia warranty either.

Dude, this is so right - it's just also crossed over in to politics. My FIL is a GM guy - only will ever own a GMC truck. My MIL drives a Yukon. Before that, they had an Envoy and an older Sierra. He loves my F150, but would never own one.

Just like he's said Obama pushing for the ACA was the single most-helpful thing a US President has ever done for him, yet he'd never vote Democrat for anything, ever.

I have always been very impressed with the Telluride/Palisade. A damn good vehicle and a very good value since many of the bells and whistles are standard. And it uses regular gas.

Sounds as if you should rent a truck (or any vehicle) when you need one.

How often do you camp? Move?

You’re a young guy. Buy a pick-up truck and you’ll quickly learn how many “friends” you have. You’ll be moving a lot - it just won’t be your stuff.

This is correct. You get a fully loaded vehicle with ALL the bells and whistles for $25,000 less than a lexus, bmw, etc. Plus the warranty and regular fuel. I don't think I have ever ridden in a car that had more features.

I camp pretty often, otherwise I wouldn’t find it necessary to get a truck. I’m looking for something with FWD whether it’s a truck or not. Leaning towards a truck because it’s just easier to throw shit back there than have to deal with SUV seats.

I also do the grocery shopping for my household, which has been harder without a vehicle. Usually I’ll have dinner done by the time my SO comes home, but we’ve been having to do some weeknight grocery store trips since I’m without a vehicle.

One interesting thing to watch with Trump 2.0 will be how he handles the electric cars issue. He's always been on record as opposing a mass switch to electric vehicles, has said so many times in his campaign rallies, and that's because a good deal of his base doesn't want them. OTOH, he's now buddies with Elon Musk, who I'm sure will tell him that electric cars are the coming thing he needs to get on board. The direction Dear Leader chooses to go in will be interesting to watch.

I guess this is a glimpse of it

Leon pulling up the ladder behind him. He doesn't want his competitors to benefit from the EV credit.
