Carolina Hurricanes owner buys Portland Trail Blazers

I LOVE hockey. But I hate the Hurricanes and the Panthers. It's the bandwagon fans.
Don't know how many bandwagon fans there are for the Canes... If you live in the area and have ever gone to a game, it is easy to become a fan. That is how my family came to our Canes Fandom, and we enjoy going to 4 or 5 games a year and watching many on TV. But we were never really hockey fans before 15 yrs ago...

And never seen anyone from outside of this area claim to be Canes fans, so it really is a local phenomenon.

As for the "Walmart" dookies, well, not sure how you can square your above statement with your apparent fandom of a team with what is almost entirely a bandwagon fanbase. You can, of course, keep your team and your "fans" and... well, you get the drift! 😉

The Hornets sit at the intersection of small market disadvantages, poor ownership, and terrible luck.

I'm not sure you could have a franchise perform so poorly for so long if you actually tried.
The ownership is new, so can’t so can’t say it’s poor ownership at the moment. I have a good friend who knows someone who works for the Hornets and works closely with the ownership. She also worked in that same position with the old ownership, and she says it’s night and day. The new ownership seems to know what it’s doing and is very focused and invested.

I'm genuinely optimistic. I think we get a championship sometime in the next 5 to 245 years.

The new ownership may be great, but they're new and the Hornets' history is absolutely terrible.

I'm not a Hornets' fan, but I think it would be great if they could develop into a respectable franchise, even if that's as good as it gets for them.

I cannot control anyone's fandom but my own. You're speaking from your personal experience. Cool. From my experience, the Panthers and Hurricanes have a ton of bandwagon fans who Dab it up and scream keep pounding when they're in the superbowl but are nowhere to be found when they're 1-15. Same with the canes, though they have been really good lately. I'm sure this is true of many fanbases, the locality of these teams make it worse for ME. Obviously not everyone feels this way. And I've never understood the "but they're the home team" mantra. None of those players are from North Carolina, so? I do, however appreciate the contributions the owners/players make to local charities and what not and have even contributed... but I'll never cheer for either franchise.

Edit to add. Michael Jordan is from North Carolina... I love seeing him do well. Love that he's in NASCAR, hope his teams continue to find success, love seeing his boat (Catch 23) do well. I think he won a tournament last weekend. To me, this is what it means to pull for the locals.

This will be extraordinarily unpopular here, but the Nipple was EXACTLY what the Hornets need going forward.

The hornets seemed like they were headed in the right direction way back in the day when they had Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning but then LJ got hurt and was never the same player after that and it's been all downhill ever since

Um. Those teams don’t have bandwagon fans. Their fanbase is made up almost entirely of people who live in or are originally from their market and root for them regardless of how good or bad they are. Bandwagon fans are fans who have no real connection to the team or its locale and hop on the bandwagon because the team does well or for some other superficial reason (like having a popular star player) despite having no connection to the team or locale.

You’re confusing enthusiasm for bandwagonism. You’re not going to be doing much celebrating or shit-talking when your team is sucking. But it’s still your team.

To me, bandwagon fans are fans who wear your shit and cheer for you when you're good but disappear and say things like "Well I was only cheering for the Panthers because they're the home team" I grew up a Cowboys fan!

Nah, the Hornets 1.0 was a solid franchise all around. LJ and Zo were exciting and things initially looked good for the future with them, but those weren’t the best Hornets teams.

The 1997 and 1998 Hornets teams with Glen Rice, Anthony Mason, Vlade Divac, etc. were really good. And then the 2001 and 2002 Hornets with Baron Davis, Jamal Mashburn, David Wesley, PJ Brown, etc. were good. The 2001 team had the Hornets’ best postseason performance as they made it to game 7 of the eastern conference semifinals. The 2000 team with Eddie Jones as the star was good too.

Unfortunately there was a dark cloud hanging over that 2002 season as it was announced that the Hornets would leave town after that season. But the original Hornets franchise was pretty darn good once they got going and finished on a solid note before leaving town.

I live in Charlotte and never met anyone who would say such a thing or acts in such a way. Not even close. And there is certainly no overlap between a Cowboys fan and a Panthers fan. None. I’m calling straight up bullshit on all that.

There may be times when Panthers fans are less excited about their team, but they’re not switching their fandom to another one. You don’t hop on a bandwagon of a team that struggles as frequently as the Panthers have.

Yeah, not sure how anyone in NC could be a bandwagon fan for the Canes.

Also, they are the most successful pro franchise in the state. Panthers and Hornets have sucked for years.

Bandwagon fans? Exactly how are these teams supposed to have legacy fans when teams have only existed for a generation? They are new teams so of course they have new fans.

If Charlotte or Raleigh get an expansion MLB team will all their fans be bandwagon fans?

The last thing Raleigh needs is an NBA team. That isn’t happening. I too cant get behind the hurricanes though. The way state fans have taken ownership of them like they are an extension of nc state just kills it for me

Why in the world would I make that up?

I’m a Kraken fan by virtue of living there when the team was founded. Went to the Canes-Kraken game this year wearing a Kraken jersey with very low expectations and had a pretty annoying time getting pestered by a bunch of 10-13 year olds that were sitting with their parents. The whole NC Stateness of the crowd and experience just oozed out too
