Special Agent Robert Bohls is a Senior Executive within the FBI's Cyber Division. As the head of the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force, the 24/7 Cyber Watch Center (CyWatch), the Global Partnership Program, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (iC3), and the Threat Analytics Collaboration Unit, Special Agent Bohls plays a pivotal role in leading and coordinating efforts in the realm of cybersecurity and victim engagement. With a distinguished law enforcement career spanning 23 years, including 17 years in the FBI, Special Agent Bohls has been at the forefront of a diverse array of investigative programs. These programs have included Violent Gangs, Transnational Organized Crime, Violent Crime, and Insider Threat/Internal Security investigations. Prior to assuming his current leadership role in Cyber, Special Agent Bohls served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge over Special Operations at the Washington DC Field Office. In this capacity, he led all crisis response, surveillance, and specialty teams, which included SWAT, Bomb Techs, WMD, and the Evidence Response Team.

Law enforcement says they have clear images of shooter, but is choosing not to release it at this time. Instead they are using technological capacity to identify shooter from the images.

They have recovered what they believe to have been the weapon used.

It’s been less than 24 hours, let’s not assume the shooter was some kind of super-operative just yet.
Not necessarily a super operative, just someone who generally knows what they’re doing. Being current or former military/law enforcement/hunter, doesn’t mean it’s Chris Kyle or Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson from Taken). It just means it’s somebody more put together than the whack jobs that normally do these things.

there is not belief the community as a whole is threatened, that this was a narrowly targeted event.

That is the first time on this thread that I’ve quoted your post (the “x 4” is the number of times I’ve given a similar reaction to everyone in this thread).

If we get months into this and the shooter can’t be identified, then perhaps this line of thought might be valid, but as of right now, it’s probably a little too early to think that cuts at the FBI prevented the agency from identifying the shooter (in less than 24 hours) after the shooter managed to escape the scene.

I don't think it's too early to question that at all. In fact it was one of the first thoughts I had. Are they short staffed after all those cuts? (they appear to be) and how is that impacting the investigation. It's certainly having some impact. The extent is certainly debatable but it appears that I'm not the only one on the planet who thought about this. Furthermore, it should never be announced that you have the suspect in custody until after he has been questioned and suspicions confirmed... unfortunately we have woefully unqualified individuals in charge at every level of government.

Ok.

On this point I disagree with what I'm reading. How many here think they could hit a human target from 700+ ft in a controlled environment such as a range?

The imagine the other variables associated.

Maybe it helps to figure out who might have done it, I'm not sure, but it is interesting how many think this was an easy shot all variables considered.
Where are you getting 700+ feet? The stuff I've seen about the suspected location of the shooter is that it was 400-500 feet away.

But in any event, while I can't speak for others, my point is not that it was an "easy shot." My point is that it is premature to jump to the conclusion that this must have been a professional and sophisticated operation rather than a single person acting alone, which is the same thing that happened when Trump was grazed in Pennsylvania.

This is why I don't understand why the released the names of the people they questioned. I just can't believe that's standard law enforcement practice. and in this particular circumstance they should have known it could put those people in danger.
I’d normally say such a fuckup had to be intentional, but Patel is grossly incompetent, so maybe not.

So they identified the people they took in and released that were not the shooter, but they won't release images of the shooter. That makes no sense.

Being current or former military/law enforcement/hunter, doesn’t mean it’s Seal Team 6 or Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson from Taken). It just means it’s somebody more put together than the whack jobs that normally do these things.
Do you think he had assistance from someone at the University? I assume he would need access to the building to access the roof.

Definitely agree on it obviously being planned. On an open college campus would s/he definitely need help to escape?

I guess help is always better, though increases risk of being turned in by an accomplice — my knowledge of planning assassinations comes from reading The Day of the Jackal, so more than a bit dated and entirely fictional.
There are now a lot of conspiracy theories out there based on video footage of two guys standing behind him doing “baseball signals” right before he was shot. Their movements definitely look deliberate, but that doesn’t mean they have anything to do with the shooting.

I have thought (but did not want to say out loud immediately after the seeing the shooting videos) that we are weirdly fortunate that this was a very targeted attack and not a mass shooting. There were a lot of people in a small area and obviously the shooter had a good line of site if he wanted to carry out a mass shooting event instead.

Which is not meant to diminish the assassination of Kirk standing on its own as a vile act. Just in the era of mass shootings this could have been even worse and as sad as I am for Kirk’s family (and for the negative impact on the social fabric of this nation), I’m glad it wasn’t a Vegas type of mass shooting.

I've read 2 football fields several times. Either way, I would be willing to bet money that most of the people talking about this couldn't hit a target from 400 ft. Especially with the additional variables in this situation.

unless he went under I-15 and walked a bit to this state park on the lake, it's only about 2 km away. Not much, but a long way to carry a rifle immediately after a shooting.
