CNN liable for defamation in FL court, settles case

It could very well get overturned on appeal.
I would hope so, if CNN appeals it. I think the Hulk Hogan Gawker verdict would have gotten overturned on appeal too, but of course Gawker couldn't afford to bond off the judgment and appeal it. (CNN shouldn't have that problem.)

Something in an article I read suggested that it had already been up to the appeals court and was sent back down. I don't know on what grounds, or what the appeal concerned. One does wonder if the state intermediate appellate court in Florida has enough juice to resist the MAGA pull here.

From what I've seen, the $5 million judgment is not likely to be disturbed. But Florida has become VERY hostile to punitives, so if they end up being awarded, that would not likely hold up on appeal.

If a jury of their peers found CNN liable, I hope CNN issues a check to the plaintiff and gets on with its business. And I hope CNN doesn't try to drag this out indeterminately. $5M is chump change to CNN. Pay up and get on with life. What will be interesting will be the punitive damages, which I believe have not yet been decided. But CNN's pre-lawsuit and immediate apology and retraction of the story as soon as the plaintiff complained, should minimize punitive damages.

No one is above the law correct?

Lying is one of the main reasons they along with the other leftwing "media" is getting what they deserve.

Did somebody on the Tar Pit drop you on your head when you guys were huffing paint?

You started a thread to gloat about a $5 million judgement against CNN when your buddies at Fox News and Info Wars got forcefully bent over and stuffed with the judicial gravy pipe to the tune of $787 million and $965 respectively?

Holy shit, you are a simple son of a bitch.

That last sentence is definitely reasonable, but thinking the jury will be reasonable after they already dinged CNN for a large $5 million award is more faith than I have.

So this is the kind of thread title which the mods need to change to something more remotely resembling the truth and/or delete the thread altogether or merge to another thread. First, it’s a troll poast - if nothing else. Secondly, the thread title is totally bogus, misleading and a downright misrepresentation of anything factual. And finally, our new friend needs help starting a thread which actually has merit. This particular subject could have gone under an existing, corresponding thread like “Media…”

The OP doesn’t deserve its own thread/space… unless it needs to remain as a reminder to idiots not to start stupid treads with misleading and untruthful thread titles.

You are exactly correct. And that is why Courts of Appeals exist. The question is whether Courts of Appeal have been so corrupted by Trumpism that they will allow a vengeful jury to punish CNN for not being FoxNews.

Like most of our news media, CNN has moved steadily to the right over the election cycle this year, and it's increasingly hard to find a true left-wing news source that's also legacy media, but conservatives will insist to their dying day that nearly all of the news media is against them and only Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, and talk radio are on their side. It's such a part of their identity that to give up the fiction is unthinkable.

They'll bond it and negotiate a confidential settlement at a reduced figure in lieu of dragging plaintiff firm through the appeal process. I do it all the time. I don't think I've ever paid a single one of my adverse verdicts in full.

Cnn is a right wing republican propaganda arm owned by maga.

There are literally millions of magats that haven't even had their marching orders "trickle down" yet.

The main reason people don't trust the "MSM" is because there has been a very successful, long-running, right-wing campaign to erode public trust in media, going at least as far back as Rush Limbaugh in the 90s. You are an example of how well that campaign has worked. Never mind that most of the people who tell you not to trust the MSM are lying to you way more than anyone in the MSM is. I mean, who would you actually consider a trusted news source at this point?

Also, CNN is not a "mouthpiece for the left" - you should try talking to an actual leftist about CNN and see how they react when you tell them that, lol. To the extent CNN is a mouthpiece for anyone, it would probably be most accurate to say they are a mouthpiece for the political establishment, spanning both sides of the aisle but largely centrist overall.
I use CNN.com as a test to see if my Internet connectivity problems are over.

Why do I use CNN.com to test? Because I never go to the site unless it’s to check on connectivity issues.

If it loads with new “news,” the connectivity issue is resolved.
